It’s funny, I’ve spent most of the past year re-earthing up jewels from the past. Stuff I haven’t heard since the mid 90′s I’ve found this year. Diggin’ for that hard to find, obscure as a mormon in a porn convention type shit. I’ve gotten into the old stuff so much that I’ve slept on alot of the newer stuff this year. This blog for the most part is dedicated to the rare and obscure type stuff as well…..but I’m also going to give some light to some of that new stuff out there that deserves the shine.
One thing about the internet, it’s brought light to tons of music that might not otherwise be heard. Some for the good, most of it for the bad. I’m not real big on checking the millions of myspace, soundclick, and mp3 sites out there and very rarely give a listen the posted music I find on the message boards. This year though, I’ve ran into several artists that standout amoung the muck clogging the internet these days. One such artist is Lexicon from Queens, New York and his Sinistah Circle brethren.
Not to be confused with the Lexicon from the West Coast, this Queens MC holds true to tradition and drops a very worthwhile mixtape that ranks right up there with the top releases of the year. He comes correct on the majority of the mixtape and shows why he is starting to show up on tracks with the likes of Reef tha Lost Cause and Thirston Howl.
I hooked up my two personal favorites from the mixtape “The Vague Clarity Mix” along with a posse cut also found on the album to give the crew some shine was well. “Beautiful” is one of my favorite songs of the year. It reminds me alot of the Masta Ace track by the same name, but thats not a bad thing at all. “Hungry” is dark track but with real issues, which is why I like it so much. Lex comes off as a New York version of Supastition on this, airing out his trials and tribulations of life and trying to make it in the music biz.
