We are almost to the final four in the NCAA’s. By now you should know if you have a chance or not with your brackets. If you just went with basically the top ranked teams and very few upsets, you should be sitting pretty. Just another odd way how things work, if you picked the way you should have, then everything is great. But that NEVER happens, so everyone is fucked, like me, and picked upsets as usual. Oh well, I’ve only finished in the money once before and as I’ve said before, I don’t watch a lot of basketball anymore, at least, not like I used to. At least there has been some good games and that’s all you can ask for.
Interestingly enough, there has been a nice little push in new Hip Hop being released in the past few weeks and in the upcoming weeks. The last few years, nothing has really impressed me until the summer releases, but this year there is a handful of stuff making some noise. Prodigy’s “Return Of The Mac”, Redman “Red Gone Wild”, Evidence “The Weatherman”, El-P “I’ll Sleep When Your Dead”, and other are all dropping or have dropped recently. While not totally thrilled with everything, there is some decent stuff being dropped. It’s a good sign, since I though last year was rather lack luster. Shaping up to be a decent year, but I’ve learned not to get to amped up about it, because more often than not I usually end up disappointed. We’ll go over later what I’ve been feeling.
I debated with myself what tasty little morsels to post up this week. I’ll admit, I’m feeling a little lazy and don’t want to do a lot of writing today. Every so often, someone will send me some tracks as a sign of their apperciation, which is always great with me. I thought I’d share a couple reader contributions that have been emailed to me over the past couple weeks.
The first group of tracks is from Diego from the T.O. (Toronto for all you suckas!). Honestly, I didn’t know much about some of the tracks, thankfully he was nice enough to include a little synopsis with them
1. ADL – Daddy
ADL was an Swedish MC, who dropped this track in 92ish. I didn’t know anything about him, but appears he has a decent amount of stuff according to discogs.
2. Ghetto Concept – E-Z On The Motion
A Toronto group according to Diego, which dropped in ’93 – ’95 time frame. Nice track in my opinion.
3. Grand Puba – Off The Hook
Alright, brownie points to whoever can tell me where this track came from. I had it already, but I know it’s an unreleased/wasn’t released on any of his albums joint. Soundtrack maybe? I’ve always been a big Puba fan regardless.
4. UMC’s – Swing It To The Area Remix
The B-Side remix from “One To Grow On”
5. Top Quality – Magnum Opus
Dope joint that has been on a WYDU classic before.
6. Nish Raawks featuring Saukrates – On The Raawks
Big thanks goes out to Diego. He is also looking for some tracks, so if anyone can help him, it’d be much appreciated.
good feeling – souls of mischief – a-plus – 1994 diggin’ in the crates – showbiz & a.g. featuring diamond d and lord finesse – showbiz – 1991 gold digger (RMX) – epmd – epmd – 1990 crossover (RMX), thump mix i believe – epmd – epmd – 1992 never no more (RMX) – souls of mischief – snupe – 1994 mary jane (RMX) – alkaholiks – madlib – 1994
Next is another collection of tracks with some dope shit in it. This one is from Nawledge, so all respect and big ups need to be directed toward him.
1. Black Poets – Just Don’t Faze Me
I know nothing about these cats, but for some reason, this shit grabs me. Reminds me of something like True Culture or something from back in the day. The boom bap beat is cool, even with the singing on the hook. I like it, is there anything else out by these cats? From ’93.
2. Something wrong with the track….
3. Hard 2 Obtain – Street Dwellers
From one of my favorite LP’s of that era, this is a track off the Hard 2 Obtain’s “Ism & Blues”. If this track doesn’t make you go out and get the re-issue, I don’t know what will.
4. Diamond D & Ronnie Foster – Summer Song (Remix)
Beautiful instrumental, not sure where it’s from, but it’s some nice chill music
5. Ready Ta Roll – Drug Game
From ’94, another group I know very little about, but this is pretty dope as well. It’s filled with all the stereotypes of the time, but maybe that’s what makes it so fun to listen to. It has the nice jazzy horns in the peat ala Pete Rock, an MC that sounds like he could have been in Onyx, and posse shouted chorus. God I love music like this.
6. Da King & I – Tears (Darp Vibe Remix)
I was actually looking for this off and on for awhile. Better than the original in my opinion. It us flips a common sample (name escapes me) but it’s just a cool, laid back joint.
7. Slick Rick – It’s A Boy (Large Pro Remix)
MUCH better than the original. Shit’s dope. Check it if you never have.
8. Velore – Sex & Guns
I’m not familiar with this one either. Not sure if this is the same Velore from the late 80′s that was on some party vibe. Feel free anyone to shine some light on this.
9. Little Indian – One Little Indian (Buckwild Remix)
I never was particularly crazy about this joint, but the Buckwild beat is pretty nice
10. L Swift – Check The Style
Pretty dope track. L is from the Natural Elements and one of the leaders of the late 90′s indie boom.
11. Saafir – Light Sleeper (remix)
Worth the download alone. I love this joint. I heard it a long time ago on a mixtape that I lost, so I was happen to have this back.
12. The Candy Store – Memories
I didn’t know anything about this crew either. I was expecting some R&Bish/Soul type shit with the name, but that’s not the case. This is pretty dope, although I can’t find much about them.
13. Creative – Presentation (remix)
Another that stumps me. I like it though. I have nothing
on them though…..shine some light. This beat is fucking dope though.
Thanks to both Diego and Nawledge for sharing. If anyone ever wants to send me shit like this, I’m always down for that. I obviously don’t have everything and even more obviously, I don’t know everything. Thanks goes out to both of you
I’m a big fan of Tha Alkaholiks and of J-Ro. The Ro-gram is with JuJu records and is dropping his debut solo album before the summer. Well my man Cleas hit me off with a download of his first single “U Call That Love” feat Chords (who is dope in his own right) and wanted me to spread it around. After Cleas has been more than generous with hitting me up with promo materials and I’m a fan of J-Ro, I’d be more than happy to pass it around….

Be sure to check out JuJu Records
and hit up J-Ro’s Myspace page..
I don’t usually do the promotion thing, but if I believe in the music, I’ll be more than happy to help with a little promotion…or if you have a lot of cash, I can be bought pretty easy as well…haha.
Trav’s Top Spins For The Week……
1. El-P – I’ll Sleep When You’re Dead
mmmrgph mprpggh….That was me with my foot in my mouth. A couple weeks ago, I slammed El-P, because I didn’t understand what the hype around his upcoming release “I’ll Sleep When You’re Dead” was all about. I never understood all the hype around Def Jux, and besides a couple releases from the label, I’ve never been big on them. I’m not going to get into the whole Nerd rap label, because honestly, I think if you are going around calling shit nerd rap, you yourself have some insecurity issues and spend too much fucking time on the rap messages boards. Tell me, who is the nerd when you have 10,000 posts on a SOHH. Despite me not into the lables on music, I just couldn’t get with his stuff. Well this album is pretty fucking nice. I’m still not big on his vocals, all though it has grown on me. The beats though are……whoa. I’m big into the whole noisy production vibe such as the Bomb Squad (my second all-time favorite producers) and J-Zone, which is why I thought I should like El-P, but his beats always sounded like unorganized garbage. Not on this album, this sounds like the ghosts of Hank Shocklee and Eric Sadler possessed El-P when he made this album. It’s a dark album with craaaazy production. So far, I’m loving it.
2. Evidence – The Weatherman
I knew this was coming out, but I wasn’t all that excited about it. The last Dilated album was….YAWN…..and while I like some of Ev’s earlier stuff, he hasn’t done anything to really excite me in awhile. Then I heard “Mister Slow Flow”, which just might be my favorite track of the year so far. I like the fuzzy bassline. Well when I went to check out the album, I was pleasantly suprised. It’s not a classic or anything, but it’s got some nice cuts on it. It could have stood to be trimmed back a bit though.
3. Redman – Red Gone Wild
Noticed the header at the top of this list says “Top Spins”, not favorites. This is starting to get kind of old, although I was kind of expecting this result this time. The last three projects Red has released (Malpractice and the two mixtapes) I’ve been hyped to hear them since at one time Redman was my favorite MC and the last three times I’ve been disappointed. Make that four. Sure, he has some good rhymes and is still pretty nice on the mic, but these beats sound like…..not sure how to describe it, but there is no “soul” in them. Meaning, they just feel void of any feeling really. I’ll probably by this since I’m a completest nerd and already have all of his other projects, but I’ll be looking for it used.
4. Prodigy – Return Of The Mac
I wanted to like this, I really did…..but….I’ll give it a few more spins to see if I’m missing something.
5. Marco Polo – Port Authority
If for only the Masta Ace track “Nostalgia”…..daaaaaayum! Actually after my two hour repeat session with the Ace track, I gave the rest of the album some play, not too shabby.
No “Why?” section this week….I’m itching to do other stuff……
On the subject of Masta Ace, Mastaace.com has been redone and is looking pretty nice. You can play some music that’s been done by our own DJ SoulClap while perusing the site looking at the gallery pictures and checking out other stuff. The site has been shut down to new members, but thats going to be lifted pretty soon. Even if you are not big on internet message boards (which I’m not) this is still a pretty good one with some intellegent, cool people (I’m there, so you know it has to be). Just don’t go on there shopping your “bits” (inside joke). Besides, if you make an effort to be part of the community, you get an invite to talk to Ace, Words, Punch or Strick themselves when there is a chat with them. It should be open next week. Just don’t piss off CC (Ace’s cousin).
That’s it for this week….
