59. The Pharcyde-Bizarre Ride II The Pharcyde

Where were you when you first heard heard “Passing Me By”?…yes, it’s one of those songs. Quick story….or maybe not so quick, “Passing Me By” got me fired from my job pumping gas at Sunoco on the Pennsylvania Turnpike during the summer between my Junior & Senior years of High School, no sh*t!. Let me explain, I used to be quite the baller (I’ma toot my own horn here for a minute) back in high school…I still play quite a bit, but we all know we’ll never be the athletes we were! Well, needless to say it was a Sunday afternoon (the day on which we always had our summer league B-Ball games)and I convinced my best friend to run me to Camelot Music to pick up “Bizarre Ride..” in his beat down, sh*t brown (or whatever horrendous color it was) Chevy Citation after our game. I had read about “Ya Mama” in the Sure Shot Singles of The Source earlier that week and based on the comedic content and good review of the aforementioned single I was looking forward to checking out “Bizarre Ride..”. Of course, I picked it up along with a few Maxi-singles (fuc*in Maxi-singles!!)Later that evening, it just so happened that my best friend and I worked the same night shift at Sunoco…and, before I go any further..what kinda’ idiot would put two ruthless 17 year old best friends behind the counter by themselves to semi-overlook an establishment? Being on the Turnpike we saw all kinds of crazy sh*t…I mean, I pumped gas for a 70 year couple who were buck-naked in a Mazda Miata before…and the truckers?..

Here’s where I’m going with this, I was lovin’ my first listen to “Bizarre Ride..” which I poopped in the tape deck on the way to work. Let’s see, you had the ill “4 Better Or 4 Worse”, “On The DL” (which celebrated my second favorite pastime, next to Basketball during my adolescent years), and of course “Ya Mama”..which is about what the title suggests. The commute to work was about 30-35 minutes long so I had to cut off the tape just before “Passing Me By”. Often, when my buddy and I shared the same night shift we would rotate out to the car to take naps in two hour shifts (meaning I’d watch the station for 2 hours, he’d sleep, then we’d rotate until our shift was finished). When it was my turn to catch a nap, I was too hyped to hear what the remainder of “Bizarre Ride…” sounded like so I turned on the deck again…and there it was, the opening Hendrix riff to “Passing Me By”. Whaaaat!!! That song and everything about it had me going nuts, I loved it so much that I just kept listening and rewinding, listening & reminding, over & over. Before I knew it it was my turn to watch the store again and I had been awake throughout the time I was gonna’ catch some zzzzzz’s. After switching with my friend around 1 a.m., next thing I know, I wake up around 4:30 a.m. behind the counter with some dude who looked like Big Black from the Rob & Big show on MTV staring down at me asking me if I can change his flat tire.

Fast Forward to 6 a.m., shift change. Normally, we do the books (adding up fuel, merch. sales, you get the picture) before each shift change. Much to my surprise, our shift came out $2100.00 (not $210.00) short in funds for our fuel sales. My buddy and I were let go on the spot for our mishap. All I know is there are about seven 18 wheelers out there who got free fuel that evening all thanks to “Bizzare Ride II The Pharcyde”…-Eric

60. De La Soul-Buhloone Mind State

“When I….First….Heard…..”Buhloone Mind State”……I thought it sucked…Period!! Remember the dude on the “De La Soul Is Dead” skits when he first heard “3 Feet High..”? Yeah, well that was me, BLAAAAAAHH! What really pissed me off was that I was sooo amped to pick up this full length after hearing “Breakadawn” (damn, that Michael Jackson sample was smooth as hell) bump all over the radio throughout the summer of my Junior year in High School. To me, it was obvious that Pos, Mace, & Dove had spent a little too much time with Guru’s “Jazzmatazz” in there headphones while whipping up “Buhloone Mind State”. My initial reaction was “Damn, this shit is just too damn jazzy!! I’m not talking “Low End Theory” jazzy, but smokey town hall, 10 people in attendance, no air conditioning JAZZY! Sh*t, I honestly didn’t listen to I Am I Be” long enough for the beat to kick in until 2000! What about “I Be Blowin”? Who the hell is Maceo Parker and what the hell is he doin’ on my De La Soul album playing a trumpet?…and where the hell are the lyrics?…my disgruntled ass questioned. Other than “Breakadawn” this album was dead to me, it’s a damn shame that I was a 16 year old punk who would’ve much rather listened to “The Chronic” or “Bacdafucup” (although, that may be the general consensus)than this BS! I can admit it, I just wasn’t mature enough for “Buhloone Mind State”.

Bottom Line, what I hated about “Buhloone Mind State” then is what I’ve come to love today. Perhaps, my favorite De La album from their historic catalog (I still don’t see what is so damn special about “Stakes Is High”) of classics “Buhloone…” is straight up Genius!! Of course, the same can be said about “3 Feet…” & “De La Soul Is Dead” ..but this is one of those albums that you can break out on Memorial Day (yes I did!) every year and it still will provide you with a perfect soundtrack for an evening of chillin’ with family & friends. If I could kick myself in the ass for not giving this album it’s proper due back in 1993….or hell, the whole 90′s for that matter….I would do so proudly. Today, I really can’t pick a favorite off of this album. It’s kinda’ like “The Main Ingredient”, “Whut?Thee Album” or even “Enter The Wu-Tang” where the overall fluidity of the album hinders you from selecting that one standout track..simply because their all quality. If you’ve given up on “Buhloone Mind State” like I once did, break it out again and I promise you that you’ll soon see the light as well. As corny as it may sound, this album is like fine wine it gets better with…awww hell, enough already! Just pay homage to one of De La’s undermentioned masterpieces…-Eric

61. Common Sense-Can I Borrow A Dollar?

Ahhh, Common Sense…not Common….Common Sense! You see, when I think of the artist now known simply as Common I remember the “blunts, bitches & brews” Common with the “hiccup” rhyme flow that emulated that of that of it’s originators Das Efx. I’ve placed Common Sense’s “Can I Borrow A Dollar?” in my Top 100 simply because of the memories that this album holds for me. I first picked up “Can I Borrow A Dollar?” on my drive home from purchasing my first hooptie ( the one & only Baby Blue Honda Civic Hatchback) with the 3 G’s I had saved up

over the summers before helping my dad out with his farming business. That same day I also picked up Zhigge’s self titled debut album (on the strength of “Toss It Up”), along with Insane Poetry’s debut (damn, they were on some other sh*t, huh??) Like I’ve said in countless posts before this, I was introduced to Common Sense (much like basically all of the music I bought circa 1993-1996) via his album review in The Source ( I think it got 3.5 mics, but I remember seeing “Charm’s Alarm” in the Fat Tape section) and I was very impressed with the beats that backed Common’s “still in development” rhyme stylie. This was the Common that we all loved from the jump, comedic style and delivery, nonsensical rhymin’, sh*t talkin’ Common…And you know what?.. this album was just…Fun! Of course, Common just totally stepped his game up with “Resurrection” much to my delight as well as many the backpacker. Then came Miss “I’ll turn a brother out in a minute” Badu (damn, what is she doin’ to these cats?) , which was around the time “One Day It’ll A Make Sense” dropped and that’s where Common lost me for a minute. Needless, to say I came back around “The Corner” with 2004′s release of what I consider a present day classic “BE”. Okay, so let’s get back to “Can I Borrow A Dollar?”. First of all, you remember the flow and you remember the content..I wanna’ talk about the BEATS. With the bulk of the production handled by Immenslope (No I.D…..damn, he laced up Rhymefest’s “Fever”!!!), the Twighlite Zone (?) and one cut (Heidi Hoe) from the Beatnuts, “Can I Borrow…” boasted some pretty decent beats. “Charms Alarm” has always been my favorite track here, with “Soul By The Pound” not trailing behind too far (BTW, what about the “Soul By The Pound” remix?..talk about some Bottom! Of course, I could go on & on to justify why this is ahead of “Like Water For Chocolate” but it’s just a different Common…a totally different style and the whole nine yards…and damn it! that’s the Common Sense I miss!…-Eric

“Now what do they have to do with each other?”, well absolutely nothing and I was planning a whole different post with whole albums etc, just to find out after I finished; that I couldn’t upload them, so I have to leave you with the few tracks I uploaded..

First is the 1991 Tommy Boy released “Ooh I love You Rakeem” EP (well most people refer to it as EP, though there are only 3 different tracks on it, i wonder what GO14 says ;) ) from RZA then still known as Prince Rakeem, just after its release he would go to jail and after that he would go on and bless us with the Wu, who I feel don’t need any further descriptions…

1.”Ooh We Love You Rakeem (Baggin’ Ladies Mix)”
2.”Ooh We Love You Rakeem (Baggin’ Ladies Instrumental)”
3.”Deadly Venoms (Vocals Up)”
4.”Sexcapades (DMD Mix)”
5.”Sexcapades (Wutang Mix)”
6.”Sexcapades (DMD Radio Mix)”
7.”Sexcapades (DMD Instrumental)”
8.”Sexcapades (Wutang Instrumental Mix)”

download (rapidshare)

Second is the promo only pressing of Jeru The Damajas „East New York Stalks“ released after the prophet left the Gangstarr Foundation featuring the Gangstarr diss track “Friend or Foe” main mix also known as “Friends”. Premier had produced his entire debut album “The Sun Rises In The East” and his second release “Wrath of the Math” after this they parted ways, some say due to financial disagreements but I remember also hearing that premier had something going on with Jerus sister or something like that well any way, here it is. I hope everyone had a great and safe holiday weekend that consisted of no DUI’s or any run-ins with Po-Po, no accidents, but plenty of memories and hot bitches (or women for those easily offended). Memorial Day is made for BBQ’s and lot’s of drinking for those of you overseas. Some of my most fond memories occur on Memorial Day’s of the past. This one won’t be in any scrapbooks for me, if I did that type of shit, but it was pretty “ho-hum”. Saturday consisted of a 14-hour day doing catering. The morning blew ass, sitting up tables for a 250 people person party all by myself and taking it down pretty much all by myself. The afternoon was a bit better since we did a private party with a filthy rich doctor who liked his booze. The good doctor ended up doing shots with us and it was even rumored he was taking a few tokes of the Mary Jane, although I didn’t witness that. By the time I got home and took a shower it was late enough that I blew off the BBQ I was supposed to be at. It was already late and I was beat and didn’t want to deal with the massive operation of playing catch up with the rest of the drunken assholes. So I just sat down with a 12-pack of cold CL’s and watched “Beerfest” until I could no longer keep my eyes open.

Sunday was spent recovering from basically moving 50 tables and 500 chairs from the day before. My old ass isn’t in the shape it once was. It wasn’t a bad day to go storm chasing here, but I didn’t want to do anything but sit on my ass, which is what I did. There was a few video games, sleeping on the couch watching the resurgent Rockies beat the Giants in extra innings and I caught up on some music I’ve been meaning to sit down and listen to. It was basically a lazy fucking day, which was fine by me. Today, I’m writing this on Monday, was more of the same although I swore to do something productive. I justified it in my mind by telling myself I worked 64 hours in the last seven days. Add that to the fact I told a female (it’s always tougher moving females because you know they aren’t going to help much, no offense) friend I’d help her move tomorrow after work and dammit, I deserve some R&R.

I’ve decided to “loosely” track my beer intake this summer to see how close I get to my fellow Denver blogger Commish’s “Slushy Gutter Summer” adventure of last year. He has yet to decide to pursue the mark this year and judging by his wife’s message on his blog, it looks like he might be in for a divorce if he does it this year. What this basically consists of is drinking 528 (the height of Denver, knock off the zero at the end) beers from Memorial Day to Labor Day, which roughly equals out to almost six beers a day or 42 beers a week. I’m just going to keep track and if I seem to be on pace, I might try to take a shot at the mark. The thing that worries me is that I work at 6 a.m. weekdays, so that kind of kills any monster drinking during the week, but I’ve been known to take down 30-40 beers in a good weekend, so it’s possible. Depending on when he starts “Memorial Day”, as in weekend or the actual day itself, and if “weekend” includes Friday night, I’m anywhere from 16 beers (anything containing a serving is a beer for all intended purposes) to one, depending on the actual start date. All I got to say is, if I’m going to attempt this, no more of those fucking 40oz’s. I do have a BBQ next Friday night with a 6:30 start time which gives me a good chance to hit around the 20 beers mark as long was I stay away from the hard stuff. Also, since I’m helping that friend move tomorrow, I never move sober and I don’t have to work until noon on Wednesday, so there is a chance to make-up some ground. A couple good weekend getaways/camping trips/parties over the summer and I might have a shot. I’m sure Commish himself will be along to clarify the rules for me. Who knows, we might have to get together for a WYDU vs. SGS drink off sometime over the summer ala Beerfest or some shit. Aww fuck yeah, it’s summer time.

MUSIC

Well since this is a music blog, I best be for tossing up some music for the peoples consumption. Again, no real rhyme or reason behind these particular tracks except it’s shit I like. Some I might actually be in or over my heading explaining a couple of them, but what the hell, I never said I knew everything. First off….

Some Shameless Promotion

If you’ve been around this blog since the beginning, and I doubt many of you have, one of our firsts posts was a review for an MC who I have a lot of respect for, my man Lex. I agree that it’s easier to like someones music when you actually have some sort of connection with them, whether it be friends in the “real world” or just through message boards and that way, but while Lex is a cool dude who have had the pleasure to deal with in the past, his music speaks for itself. I hate using labels such as this, but it’s “Grown Folks” music, dealing with real life issues that us 30 somethings with kids and bills deal with. I highly suggest giving this a listen. I have yet to listen to it (I just got the link for it 5 minutes ago), but if this is half the album the “Vague Clarity” is, it’s well worth the listen.

Here is Lex in his own words:

Peace y’all. I’ve just released my second CD entitled “forward movement.” This is to serve as a Street Album/Mixtape style album. My main objective with this project is to show my talent and versatility on the mic as well as generate a buzz for my upcoming projects. There are 21 songs on this project and it is being released for free d/l as well as tangible purchase. If you would like to purchase a CD, you can visit my myspace page here. Domestic sales are $5 (shipping & handling included) & foreign sales are $8 (s & h included). Paypal is my preferred method of payment.

I encourage anyone with a blog or website that enjoys the CD to post a link to the album on their page. I also encourage you to post this link, or your own on any messageboards and on
line communities that you may frequent. Again, my mission is to spread the word on my music and the best way to make that happen is thru word of mouth. If you support the music, please help me push it forward. Anyone who wishes to review the CD please feel free to do so and post it on your page. I ask that if you do decide to write a review that you send it over to me once it’s posted. All feedback is welcome.

Sweet N’ Lo feat Tha Alkaholiks – Excuse Me As I Rip It

Since we are discussing beer and binge drinking, we might as well post up a track from the ultimate hip-hop drinkers, Tha Alkaholiks. This was from the Sweet N’ Lo album from . I don’t know much about them, after all I was never big on female MC’s or groups for the most part, but in my quest to track down most of Tha Liks material, I ran across this and had to have it. I believe they say in the track that it’s produced by E Swift, which I can totally see, it sounds like some E Swift beats. Swift used to be one of the most slept on producers around. As of late, he seems more focused on trying to fit in with the mainstream instead of sticking to his own signature dope sound, but it’s all good. All I know this track gets me amped for the J-Ro and Tash solo albums that are reportedly supposed to drop this summer.

The Mighty Maestro – One Man Band & Stop Selling Me Dreams

These are from a Tuff City single from ’89 that I’ve always enjoyed. I can’t remember where I originally heard them, I’m guessing I heard “One Man Band” on “Yo!” back in the day, that’s where I heard most of those obscure tracks or maybe it was a mixtape I bought back in the day. Regardless I completely forgot about “One Man Band” until Idiot Proof from Cocaine Blunts tossed them up one day. “Stop Selling Me Dreams”, which was the b-side to the single, starts off sounding almost Go-Go-ish in nature but it mellows out and follows the previous tracks formula. I don’t have much to say about the artist, I really don’t know much about him other than a few things I’ve read here and there. According to his Myspace page, he did some remix work for YZ and I must say, judging by the beats on his myspace, dude was nice behind the boards.

Positive K – Quarter Gram Pam

I’ve always liked Pos K, even before his “I Got A Man” which is the reasoning behind his one hit wonder label applied to him by the mainstream. I can’t remember if I first heard him on the “Nightshift” 12 inch or “I Ain’t Havin’ It” track with him and MC Lyte, but I liked both, especially the “Nightshift” single that contained both the album version and the remix version with Big Daddy Kane. Despite all of that, this track dropped way back in ’87 a good five years before the “Nightshift” single. He definitely improved from this track, which he sounds a bit uncomfortable on the mic and doesn’t have that cocky arrogance found on his only LP he released. I won’t even venture to guess who produced this joint either, but it’s nothing remarkable. He had been known to work with Big Daddy Kane, who I greatly doubt produced this since he himself was just starting out at this time. He also did some work with Jazzy Jay of the Zulu Nation fame, which is possible or maybe even one of the First Priority Family members such as Milk D or King of Chill. It sort of reminds me of LL Cool J’s “Dear Evette” or “Bristol Hotel”, which kind of deals with the same fast woman as the subject matter. The main reason I put it up is it’s early introduction to Positive K, who will always been known as “that guy who did that song “I Got A Man”. (Note: It was produced by Daddy-O, I was way off)

The Tribezmen – Who Got The Vibe

Some typical Boom-Bap Jeep music from the mid 90’s, which fine by me. I know next to nothing about this group. I think it was one of those tracks I picked up off of Vinyl Addicts during they’re heyday. It’s nothing out of the ordinary from the music that came out during this time. It sounds like something that Da King & I, Das Efx, Lords Of The Underground or any of those groups from that time could have made. I’m not saying it’s a bad thing because that’s the r
eason I love that era of hip-hop and if you were down with that era of hip hop, you’ll probably more than likely love this track. I wouldn’t mind hearing an album from these cats though. Good luck finding much info about them.

King Bee w/ Ultramagnetic MC’s – Cold Slammin’ (Hydro Mix)

Why the hell I haven’t put this on a WYDU Classics Volume already I have no clue, but it should have been on one of the first ones. This shit is fucking incredible. Although, I’m not a big fan of Kool Keith on his post Ultra days, I was a big Kool Keith fan from the Ultra days and this track shows why. Again, it’s not totally different from other stuff that was coming out during this time, but it just does it so well. There is a version that appears on King Bee’s “Royal Jelly” LP that was released ’90 that isn’t as good as this one,but it’s not bad either. One of the King Bee MC’s sounds like the dude from “Urban Dance Squad” which isn’t a good thing. The album, which I think a lot was done by Ced Gee isn’t all that bad and I think can be found on Bust The Facts. The track is produced by the King Bee members, All Star Fresh and BC Boy. I don’t know much about them though.

Trav’s Top Spins For The Week

After not really downloading anything for almost two weeks, I finally took a day and caught up on some of the stuff I wanted to listen to. This past weekend was a good way to sit down and listen to some albums I’ve been meaning to listen to and a few things got more than one listen and here’s the list.

1. KRS-One & Marley Marl – Hip Hop Lives

I didn’t know what to expect from this when I started listening to it. I’m not going to say it’s classic or anything, because it’s not. That being said, it’s the best thing I’ve heard from KRS since “I Got Next” and that’s coming from someone who considers KRS as one of the top 3 most important figures in modern Hip Hop history. It does get a little tiring listening to Kris say the same thing over and over and over again, but he has a right to say what he’s saying. The beats aren’t as good as I was hoping, but Marley hasn’t really made anything “mind blowing” in my opinion since the Lords and one could argue that K-Def did most of that album. I found it mildly annoying that he uses the same horn lope for the third time Musika. With all that being said, I can see this growing on me. I listened to it once then for some reason I wanted to listen to it again about three hours later, which is always a good sign.

2. Big City – The City Never Sleeps
I have to admit this kind of snuck up on me. I heard about this a few months ago, but completely spaced it off, so when I saw it, I thought it was another one of those run of the mill crap albums that show their ugly faces for a few weeks only to be never seen again. I’m not sure how I finally put two and two together and got giggly as a little girl, but I had to check it out when I finally figured it out. For those of you who were living in the same bubble as I was, this is Psycho Les, Al Tariq and Problemz. Being the big Beatnuts fan that I am, I expected a lot in one way, but in another way, I was deeply disappointed in Pyscho Les’ solo offering from last year. Well, it’s better than that effort, but still not up to par with the usually consistent Beatnut releases either. It did leave me wanting to listen to it again, which in this day in age is a good thing. My favorite joint is “I Hear Ya”, which is typical Beatnuts flavor and Problemz is probably a better MC than any Beatnut, past or present. This one could really grow on me.
3. Blue Scholars – Bayani
It’s been a long time since I’ve had so many people tell me I have to hear a particular album. This album was getting a lot of buzz on the blog circuit and I’ve had some others tell me that I needed to hear it. In a way I hate hearing that, because I usually end up expecting the album to be more than it usually it is and when I first sat down to listen to this album, I had pretty high expectations. While it did disappoint me originally, it was good enough to gather a few more listens over the weekend. It’s on some mellow, smooth shit, which admittedly, I wasn’t really in the mood for when I first listened to it. The second listen I was in a mellower mood, so it meshed with me better. It seemed to get a little preachy toward the end, but it does require you to use your mind while listening, which I have no problem doing. My favorite beat was unfortunately on the “Second Chapter” which is essentially an intro. That beat is freaking amazing. Again, it’s something that I’m going to listen to some more, which is all I really ask for anymore. (Note: This is all I’ve been listening to this morning, I think it just took off for me)
4. Marco Polo – Port Authority
Still getting play and I’ve found a new song that I love on it. “Marquee” by OC was played about 10 times in a row the other night (I just played it five times in a row while writing this). That beat is sooooo nice. It’s a good sign if I move onto a second song on an album, it means there more reason to listen to it than just the original song that I like, which on this album was…of course…”Nostalgia”. This album has moved up into the realms of being worthy enough to purchase.
5. DJ Jazzy Jeff – The Return Of The Magnificent
Yet another producer album, but for some reason, they seem to be better than regular albums the past year or so. I was a big fan of the Oh No, Exile and Jay Dee albums last year and so far this year, two of the better albums this year are also producer albums as well. I could probably give reasons behind that, such as peoples attention spans are shorter in the digital age and are better suited to the producer albums, which are not as fluid in nature as the a traditional album is, but we’ll save that for another time. I haven’t quite gotten
over the hump by declaring this worthy of purchase, but it’s getting close.

WHY?????

Why does Pharaoh Monch sound completely out of place on that “Rehab” remix by Amy Wino errr Winehouse. Don’t get me wrong, I love anything Pharaoh Monch usually puts out, but listening to him rhyme about Nicole Ritchie and Lindsey Lohan on a song that might as well be their theme song, it just all seemed a little…hmmm…contradictory?

Why couldn’t I put down the book written entirely about the making of the Beastie Boys “Paul’s Boutique”? It’s no secret that I love that album and think it’s one of the most creative albums of any genre, so reading about how it came about in a 123 page book was good enough for me to knock out 76 pages in one sitting last week. I haven’t read it since, but I’ve been busy.

Why is being a professional football player hazardous to your health? Another NFL player, Marquis Hill, passed this weekend. At least it wasn’t a Denver Bronco this time.

Why can the Tennessee Titans kiss their hopes of a good season goodbye next year? See the Madden ’08 cover. To me, they are still the Houston Oilers, so fine by me.

Why do I hate that “Throw Some D’s On It” joint so fucking much?

Why do I have no clue who this Mims dude is? Am I really that old?

Why am I really getting amped for that Royce and DJ Premier album after listening to “Hit ‘Em” over and over? (someone hook me up with a non mixtape version)

Why aren’t more people doing remixes like they did in the old days, like “Flava In Your Ear”, with a bunch of guest artists…I kind of miss that.

Why does there seem to be more quality songs this year than last year? So far this year, I could argue that “Nostalgia”, “Can’t Forget About You” and “Mr. Slow Flow” are all worthy of the top spot so far, at least in my book and all could have easily been the best last year.

Why do I just want to punch the TV screen everytime I see that fat pig Rosie O’Fat aka Rosie O’Donnell. That fat bitch just annoys the fuck out of me and shouldn’t be allowed on public TV anytime between the hours of 6 a.m. and midnight. Don’t get me wrong, I’m fairly liberal, but she’s just a fucking quack.

Why is the Hip Hop magazine an endangered species? Will they ever come back? Probably not.

Why did Miss Brazil get screwed out of the Miss Universe last night (don’t ask me why I was watching it). She could be my Miss Universe anytime.

Why are Latina’s (Brazil, Mexico, Venezuela, Puerto Ricans) the hottest women in the world. Don’t let my Greek girlfriend hear that.

Why do I HATE all the reality bullshit shows. Age of Love? The Bachelor? Give me a break.

Why do I feel guilty then to say I kind of like that “The Lot” show about movie directors. I originally stopped on the channel because of the hot Latina announcer it had then laughed at one of the movies and started watching it I’m not sure it’ll rope me totally, but summer TV is pretty shitty usually.

Why did I want to go Phil Helumuth on the bitch who went chasing for a flush against me last week while playing poker and why did I just get up and walk away when she caught it on the river? I flopped a set and bet it hard, this was already after raising my pockets pre-flop. This lady had nothing on the flop and had to catch runner runner anyway you looked at it when she called my bet, but still made the call. Heart on the turn and heart on the river….good night now.

Why after listening to “Hip Hop Lives” did I have a dream that KRS stole money from me?

Why would Domingo have that same dream?

Why am I just now enjoying Pack FM’s “Whutduzfmstand4?”

Why is my uhhh cracked copy of Fruity Loops not working now? Not that I’m trying to be the next Primo, but it’s fun to play around with.

Why can’t even a Primo beat on “Get It Done” save Skyzoo? He just makes me want to fall asleep.

Why did I think since I kind of liked the El-P that I should give the new Sage Francis a chance? It still sucked balls.

Why do parents let their unsupervised children play on the internet when all
they really want is a hug?

And finally…..

Why can women get away with blowing off their significant other all day, but if a guy does that we are in deep shit?

The Nervous Mixtape: Ghetto Classics-Mixed By DJ Mister Cee

Yet another one of my recent Amazon purchases that is gonna’ be Mike Dikk’s by the end of the week (there in the mail as we speak bro!). I had initially picked this up on cassette the same day that I picked up Cash Money’s mixtape “Guess Who’s Coming To Dinner?” (see last Monday’s post) along with D’angelo’s “Me & Those Dreamin’ Eyes” “Cas-single” (that had the Erick Sermon remix on it with an added verse by Redman) back in the summer of 1995. Anyway, I’ve always been a big fan of anything Nervous put out as far as Hip Hop is concerned (not many cats know that they were primarily an Electronica/Dance/House label), let’s see…you had Black Moon, Mad Lion & let’s not forget Smif N Wessun carrying the baton for this underground label. This mixtape hosted by Mister Cee (of The Flipsquad fame) is no different than the quality you received from the aforementioned artists listed above, as it will most definitely take you back to 1995. I mean, there are so many classics to be found on this mixtape..you have Smif-N-Wessun’s remix of “Wreckonize” (probably up there amongst the “Flava’ In Ya Ear’s” and “One More Chance’s (the remix with the “Droppin’ Science” jack) as far as remixes are concerned in my book. You also have the Funk Flex assembled cast of Charlie Brown, The Biz & Ol’ Dirty Bastard (what a combination!) on the forgetten gem “Nuttin’ But Flavor” & what alot of folks have surely never heard the Brenda K. Starr remix of Mad Lion’s “Double Trouble”, which one ups the original in my opinion. I posted a similar Nervous Mixtape back around the origin of this site (do a search for Nervous), but it really featured more Black Moon drops, whereas this mixtape finds them only making one appearance (“Headz Ain’t Ready” Remix). Nevertheless, as I mentioned before be prepared to take it back to 1995 with this appropriately titled mixtape…-Eric

Masterpiece 01-Mixed By Pete Rock

Yet another one of the numerous albums that have ended up on my hard drive and I couldn’t begin to tell you how I came across it originally. “Masterpiece 01″ along with “Masterpiece 03-Mixed By Lord Finesse” (which I posted last Monday) are both Japan only releases from the Handcuts Records imprint..which I know absolutely nothing about. As far as this mixtape handled by Pete Rock is concerned, it’s not one of my favorites being that there is really no flow to the overall mix that the “Soul Brother #1″ has pieced together. Not to say that it’s a bad thing whatsoever, it’s just that tracks like the opener (Mandrill’s “Fencewalk”) seem a little out of place setting the pace for the likes of The Roots “Panic!”. The same case can also be made for The Peech Boys “Dance Sister” blending into Common’s “Go”. Still, P.R. does get major props for highlighting some of my favorite “overlooked” classics within the mix i.e, Cru’s “Bubblin” & O.C.’s “Far From Yours”. Pete also drops the Tom Scott classic “Today” which has been a major sample for some of your favorite artists. I’m sure you’ll get the same feeling as I did upon first listen when Pete drops The Lost Boyz’ “Jeep, Lex Coupes…” and leads you smack into “Freeway & Allen Anthony’s “Alright” (WTF??). While not quite as long track-wise as the Finesse “Masterpiece” I posted earlier, Pete Rock’s “Masterpiece 01″ still contains more than a few classics with decent blends that will surely make for an enjoyable listen on any road trip…-Eric

“First Toke”-Uncut Raw

Damn, I must say first and foremost that “IT” is back…and “IT” is referring to my love for Hip Hop. The funny thing is I’m finding my fix where I’m least expecting it. I don’t want to discredit any of the acts that have renewed my passion for genuine Hip Hop over the last month or so(Blue Scholars, Buff 1, Raks One, etc.), but it’s a rarity that I listen to anything at all beyond 1997. I mean, it just feels soo damn good, when you find a diamond in the rough just by coincidence and get a little bit of satisfaction in knowing that Hip Hop is NOT dead. Oh, and I’ll say it 1nce again, thank God for spots like “HHB” & “Bossplayer” (see my THOUGHTS about two weeks ago) that do offer more to the avid Hip Hop lover too check for. Acts that otherwise cats may have never heard if it were’nt for sites like these. I’m not on my “own sh*t” here, but I do pride myself in having a damn good ear for good music, but again I may be totally off in your opinion.

With that being said, it’s time to once again shed light on an “album” that has really caught my ear by surprise. After doing a few stops at the usual “blogs” I check on a regular basis, I came across “First Toke” by Uncut Raw HERE (props Bossplayer). I don’t know what possessed me to even give this a listen, maybe it was the effective but simplistic cover art (just being honest). On the other hand I’ve been pleasantly surprised more than a few times over the last few weeks so what the hell! So, who is Uncut Raw?? Sorry, not to much that I can tell you other than that they are comprised of MC’s hailing from the CHI & Akron….Selfish & Fluent, (hell, I couldn’t tell you which one is which, but one of em’ sure sounds a lot like Cappadonna). I did check their myspace page and it’s not very informative either. Most interestingly, I think that these cats are unsigned as well…if so, that’s a damn travesty! I will say this, their sound is described on their myspace page as “Ya favorite cassette you used to bump in ya’muthafukn’Walkman…..Fuck an ipod!” Boom!, that’s pretty damn accurate. Earlier in this paragraph you see I posted the world “album” in italics, the reason being this sounds more like a demo than a properly engineered, mastered album….but, that is why I love it and what makes it so fresh!!! “First Toke” is RAW, probably the rawest sh*t I’ve heard this year!!

If I had to classify the overall feel of the album, I couldn’t…you’ll really have to hear this album to do it justice. With plenty of old soul loops, and “Donuts-esque” elements it’s a beautiful listen and best of all with only a handful of the 26 cuts on “First Toke” clocking in over three minutes it does a masterful job of “Keepin’ Em’ Eager To Listen”. I mean, I’ve been playing this sh*t all weekend..nothing else, just “First Toke”. I really feel that I’m not even doing “First Toke” a favor with my words because it’s soo damn dope!! “Imwityou” starts the album off on the right foot with it’s soulful loop and finds yet another MC professing his love for Hip Hop. The last minute of “Tilthesuncomesup” is like sex for your ears at it freaks the same horn loop used on Ed O.G. & Da Bulldogs “Less Than Zero”. “Green” freaks Jay-Z’ “We can talk, but money talk, so talk more bucks” perfectly. “727″ sounds as if J Dilla were right back on the boards with the sonic bounce for Uncut Raw. Funny thing is, my highlight of the album is a 1 minute 17 second instrumental fittingly named “Anothabeat” (I uploaded it on the myspace player at the bottom of the page for your listening enjoyment :D ), I don’t know what or where the sample came from but if I was a producer or MC I’d sure as hell be doin’ some homework tonite!! I WILL but this sh*t, and I highly suggest you do the same with your hard earned bucks…I think that you’ll be pleasantly surprised as well. I said it with the Blue Scholars “Bayani” and I’ll say it here..congratulations Uncat Raw, you mad some damn good music!! Now, if you can only find a label that has somewhat of an ear for talent!…-Eric

Illegal-The Untold Truth

Comprising of Lil’ MC’s Jamal & Malik, Illegal dropped what was one of the more hardcore albums during what was considered the “kiddie craze” (about 92′-94). Hoping to capitalize on the massive success of Kriss Kross, major labels were putting up large amounts of dough to put out younger acts such as QUO, Da Youngstas, Shyheim, The FamLee,etc. Released on the Rowdy Records label, “The Untold Truth” hit the streets sometime in 1993 with the lead single “Head Or Gut”, which was produced by “The Green-Eyed Bandit” himself..Erick Sermon. I really wasn’t that impressed with “Head Or Gut” being that the production sounded like it was a leftover track from Sermon’s first solo outing “No Pressure”, and hearing a couple of 14 year olds boast about how they’ll do this and that to basically fu*k up your life…wasn’t something I was tryin’ to hear at the time. Although, “The Untold Truth” does boast some decent production which is attributed to the almost “All Star” lineup of producers i.e, Diamond D, Biz Markie, Dallas Austin, Lord Finesse and the previously mentioned Erick Sermon. I liked Jamal and Malik better as solo MC’s as they would mature much more as artists over the years. Jamal’s first solo effort “Last Chance, No Breaks” has some real BANGERS and Malik almost stole the spotlight from Snoop on “Pump Pump” off of Snoop’s classic “DoggyStyle”. I don’t think that Malik ever put out a solo joint, which is unfortunate as I always felt he was the more prolific of the duo. Anyway, I probably should’ve given this another listen recently but I always reach for Da Youngsta’s “The Aftermath” instead…-Eric

Da Youngstas-The Aftermath

Would I be jumping the gun if I said this is the best youthful album ever put out?? Probably not, as I know more than a handful of folks who share my sentiments as well. And let’s be real here, your lying to yourself if you think that Mobb Deep’s “Juvenile Hell” was a better album than “The Aftermath”. I’ve never really peeped Qu’ran Taji & Tarik’s debut album “Somethin’ 4 Da Youngstas” and I do think it’s probably in my best interest that I don’t. Da Youngstas actually put together a pretty decent three album stretch with “The Aftermath”, “No Mercy” & “Da Illy Funkstaz”. Once Again, I first saw Da Youngstas performing “Crewz Pop” (which was produced by Naughty’s Kay Gee..actually, it’s 118th St. Production but you know what’s up) as the ending act on “In Living Color”. I was impressed enough to pick this album up based on the overall sound and production of “Crewz Pop”. Of course, my decision was only solidified when I saw the producing lineup for “The Aftermath” in an issue of The Source. Are you kiddin’ me?? Pete Rock, Marley Marl, Kay Gee, The Beatnuts & DJ Premier all contributed beats for Da Youngtas sophomore success. Tell me somebody didn’t have the hookup!!! Jesus, that’s quite an impressive production assembly for a few teenagers…SH*T! It is what it is, and that’s what makes this album so special..because honestly I couldn’t recite one line from any song on this album but the beats are incredible. I don’t know if an instrumental of “The Aftermath” was ever released but it needed to be, because this is some of the best production on an LP from what many of us have deemed “The Golden Era”. Don’t be mistaken, Da Youngstas are decent MC’s (albeit the moments in which they try to sound like a young Onyx..but who wasn’t at the time??), but the production is almost flawless on each and every cut. If your looking to indentify a “sound” for mid-90′s production, it’s very easy to put your finger on it with “The Aftermath”…-Eric

Shyheim-AKA The Rugged Child

“On & On”…dum, dum, dum, dum,… “On & On”…Virgin Records couldn’t have picked a better time to drop “AKA The Rugged Child” for the masses. Hot off the heels of the now-classic Wu Tang Debut, Wu affiliate “young un” Shyheim surprised alot of folks with his lyrical skill and prowness as a then 14 year old MC. With much of the production handled by RNS (RZA does produce “Little Rascals”) “AKA The Rugged Child” flows together quite nicely. “On & On” is the obvious selection for “best song on the album”, but I kinda’ liked the boom-bap bounce on “The Rugged Onez” as well. Admitingly, RZA’s aforementioned production “Little Rascals” is really nothing to write home about…it’s actually un-characteristicly “average” for usual RZA standards. I rembember when this album came out, The Source gave it 4 mics and had hyped it up like…”Make way for Shyheim, he’s the next generation of MC’in”. I wasn’t seein’ it then and it obviously never came to fruition. I must say, the difference between this album and Da Youngstas “The Aftermath” is that other then “On & On” this album struggled to keep my “16 year old A.D.D. ass” awake…even today it’s a borderline boring listen. Give me Shyheim’s follow-up “The Lost Generation” any day and I’ll be much more attentive!…-Eric

Most Played & Most DL'ed (Wink Wink) For The Week

Eric’s Most Played

  1. “Loyalty”-Blue Scholars…This track has seriously become one of my favorites of the year, I can just listen to this cut over and over again.
  2. “Desire”- Pharaohe Monch…Yet another Alchemist “heater”…P-Monch’s album of the same name needs to drop ALREADY!..lovin the M.O.P. chant on the hook
  3. “Pretty Little Sexy Mama”-Consequence…off of “Don’t Quit Your Day Job”…perfect cut for the summer ahead.
  4. “Be Somebody”-Dre (no not that Dre, Dre of Cool & Dre) f. Keyshia Cole…first heard this cut about a year ago on a Clinton Sparks “Smashtime Radio” mixtape…alot better than what you’d expect lyrically from Dre, plus the beat in CRAZY!
  5. “Selfish”-Slum Village f. Kanye West…Two Kanye West produced beats that I’ll never get tired of : “Selfish” and Alicia Keys’ “You Don’t Know My Name”…plus Elzhi’s verse is just icing on the cake..This was the ANTHEM when I was stationed in Iraq.
  6. “Girl, Interrupted”-Dez & Nobs (see THOUGHTS for more on these cats)..a twisted tale of REAL groupie luv…pick the album “Behemoth” up!!
  7. All the “Boom” skits on Devin’s “Waitin’ To Inhale”…how funny is Devin..dude has always been one of the most original cats in the game.
  8. “Dog It”-Digable Planets…Off their “Blowout Comb” album…another head-nodder I haven’t pulled out in a minute…damn, it’s a shame they only dropped two albums.
  9. “Wasn’t For You”-De La Soul..Off of the “Impossible Mission” mixtape album..De La professes their love of the music over a Ge-Ology BANGER…Sounds as if the bass is just being pulled right out of the sub-woofer…Good Music
  10. “Heated” -Nametag..off of “Ahead Of The Basics”…apparently dude is Black Milk’s cousin (he actually does over half of the beats), flips the Dionne Warwick sample Dilla used for “Stop”..check out the album HERE, Nametag is no slouch on the mic…still a little rough around the edges though.

Thursday's THOUGHTS…a day later

Posted by: Eric  //  Category: Uncategorized

THOUGHTS
  1. Damn, Royce da 5′ 9″ has got some real interesting cover art for his 12″ “Hit’ Em’” b/w “Ding”…peep it HERE…I’m not complaining though!
  2. From the leaks that I’ve heard from the new Common LP “Finding Forever”, everything is sounding pretty darn nice..especially “Southside” w/ Kanye.
  3. What ever happened to Paula Perry??…I always loved “Paula’s Jam” (BTW, that was all over the radio back in PA when it dropped) and I really dug “Extra Extra” produced by Primo.
  4. While we’re on the subject of Masta Ace’s old buddies, I remember having Leshea’s “Fulton St.” single on cassette (which was decent), but according to Discogs she also dropped an album “Rhythm & Beats” in 1997..Does anyone have this??? If so, you know the deal…
  5. Well, my dumbass finally figured out how to post my header that Mike Dikk of “Dumpin.Net” hooked me up with, I guess it pays to read the “new updates” on your dashboard once and a while!
  6. Still loving the new Blue Scholars joint “Bayani”….it seems to be picking up quite a buzz on the Net’ as well… I hope this album does well “sales-wise”, because it most definitely deserves to be recognized…damn, that rhymed.
  7. “Underground Plug Of The Week”….Again, I hate to be givin’ this dude so much “ink”, but Mike Dikk of the world famous “Dumpin.Net” put me on to this MC & DJ/Producer duo earlier in the week CLICK HERE,(link to preview a few tracks off of “Behemoth”) and I’ve got to say, this is….no, this will be the best sh*t you’ve never heard….Trust Me! Hailing from Albany, N.Y…Dez & Nobs make some of the most dysfunctional, creepy and well…genius music I’ve heard in a minute. I don’t know how “generous” Mike would be, (being that he knows these cats) but you NEED to get your hands on “Behemoth”!!!
  8. What is your take on Skyzoo & 9th Wonder’s “Cloud 9:The Three Day High”?? I initially wasn’t that impressed when I first heard it….but for some reason I’ve been playin’ it quite a bit recently and I’ve come to the conclusion that it’s an above average album…although, it was “rushed” and it sounds like it at times.
  9. No matter how big a douche bag Kanye West is at times….you’ve gotta admit your looking forward to his new album “Graduation”….he’s got a chance to have a three album run like Tribe, De La, Cube, etc….
  10. Is it just me or does your metabolism just go to sh*t when you hit 31, I swear I’ve never had less energy my whole life! I’m sure my 16 month old daughter has something to do with it. Have A Happy Memorial Day everyone!!!!!!

Sample Appreciation Vol.II – The Honeydrippers "Impeach The President"

Posted by: Eric  //  Category: Uncategorized

Feeling quite creative today I must say! With the overall success of the first sample appreciation post (The Emotions-”Blind Alley”), I figured I’d shed a little light on my second favorite “sample” or “breakbeat” of all time…The Honeydrippers “Impeach The President”. The first time I recall hearing the break for “Impeach….” would have probably been via Nice & Smooth’s “Funky For You”. Was I blown away like I was when I first heard the “Blind Alley” sample used on AMG’s “Jiggable Pie”? Probably not, but I will say that “Impeach..” has got to be one of the “Fonkiest” (as the Biz would say) breaks EVER! My favorite usage of the sample is without a doubt EPMD’s “Total Kaos” off of their “Unfinished Business” album. And while we’re on the subject of “Total Kaos”, the best and probably the funniest line of that track is “Cuz your an NR…that means a non-rapper”..CLASSIC! On the other hand Shaggy almost destroyed my love for the “Impeach..”sample with his usage on the 2000 “hit” “Mr. Lover” (I think that was the name of the song?) Okay, I gotta’ come clean…I did kinda‘ like that Shaggy joint when it first came out. On the other hand, the absolute WORST usage of “Impeach..” had to be Meredith Brooks’ “Bitch” (yeah, I know you remember that sh*t, it only played every hour on the radio for like..2 years).

Also, this cut has been jerked by more than a few R & B artists as well. I can’t even front, there is a few R & B cuts that used the sample to perfection. I loved it for Soul II Soul’s “Back To Life” (the extended version that plays at the beginning of BELLY, not the BS version they had on their album), Jodeci’s “Come & Talk To Me Remix” and lastly Janet Jackson’s “That’s The Way Love Goes” (remember Jennifer Lopez in that video?). Their are enough artists that have used “Impeach..” to probably do a five volume feature, but I’ve just pieced a few of the more “well known” uses and a few of my favorite examples thrown in there for good measure…Enjoy…-Eric
