When They Reminisce-Presents Sample Appreciation Vol.III (Playing Your Game, Baby)

Listening to Big Daddy Kane’s “Brother, Brother” this week along with the best track from Prodigy’s “Return Of The Mac” Mixtape/Album “Stop Frontin”, I’d almost forgotten how much I love the “ohh, so soulful, don’t you agree?” sample taken from the Barry White classic “Playing Your Game, Baby”. Out of all the artists that have sampled “Playing….”, I’m sure that most all would nod in agreeance over the best usage of the sample…without a doubt, it has to be Black Moon’s remix of “I Got Cha’ Opin”. Although, Kane’s “Brother, Brother” and Sylk Smoov’s “Klientele” flip the sample nicely as well. Hell, I can’t leave out Compton’s Most Wanted’s “I Gots Ta’ Get Over” either. In my opinion, this sample has been underused, not nearly as many artists have utilized this break..say, in comparison to “Impeach The President” or “Blind Alley” for that matter and that’s a damn shame. I’ve ommited just a few artists who’ve sampled “Playing Your Game…”, for example Grand Puba’s “Playin’ The Game” and Above The Law’s “Play Your Game”, simply because they only sampled Barry White’s vocal portion of the song. I’m still looking for a few tracks that sampled “Playing…”, I couldn’t find Ron C’s “Smooth Attack” or C & C Music Factory’s (remember those fools) remix of “Take A Toke” featuring Patra anywhere (if you have any of the two mentioned drop me a link in the comments, thanks in advance) While short in length (only 14 tracks), Sample Appreciation Vol.III is one of my favorites thus far simply based on the soulful essence of this breezy sample. Enjoy!!…-Eric

These sample appreciation posts are great Eric, it’s an area of knowledge that I really need to expand to complete my hip hop geekery: the more information the better!

there’s also a Biggie freestyle over “Playing Your Game” which got released on the promo “Unreleased & Unleashed EP” on Bad Boy around the time “Ready To Die” came out.

some time ago i read somewhere that Buckshot insisted to use that Barry White loop while Da Beatminerz didn’t want to do it.

Nice…definitely one of my favourite samples too….

But you missed outone of my favourites which is the 9th Wonder remix of ‘Nightriders’ by Boot Camp feat. Aaliyah. 9th chops it up crazy on that track!

Holla if you want a link!
