Let's Talk About……(Late Pass Edition)

Thes One-Lifestyle Marketing

Believe it or not, I’ve never checked out a single release from People Under The Stairs. Hell, I couldn’t even name for you a single track from any of what some folks consider “must have” releases such as “Question In The Form Of An Answer”, “O.S.T” or the more recent “Stepfather”. Ahem! After first listening to Thes One’s (1/2 of P.U.T.S., for dumbasses like myself!) instrumental album “Lifestyle Marketing” I sincerely feel that I may have been missing out. It’s a total coincidence that I even gave this album a listen, it’s been buried in my Ipod for what seems like the better half of 2007. While running some errands Saturday evening, for the first time in recent memory I just let my Ipod play on shuffle (which I never do) only to stumble onto “Hy-Vee“. The track from “Lifestyle…”, which plays out from the beginning like a 60′s commercial of sorts (with the opening “Hiiigh Veeee” sung in an almost elevator music-like manner) ….almost instantly drew me in. Immediately I placed the Ipod off of shuffle and proceeded to let the remainder of the tracks “play out”. What killed me the most was that I didn’t have the slightest idea who this was providing the mellow groves and crisp bass knocks busting through my speakers. You best believe as soon as I returned home I was searching thru Itunes trying to figure out who this genius was. It’s such a rarity when I even hear an album just once that I can’t come up with the artist name. Now keep in mind, I’ve never been that “big” on albums that are comprised of strictly “instrumentals” but with “Lifestyle Marketing” Thes does a heck of a job keeping the tracks from being stagnant and boring. With cleverly placed samples, mellow filters and most importantly “clarity” Thes has succeeded in providing me with a nice album that is cool to play in the ride on that warm summer evening (or at least what’s left of the summer) or just throw it in the headphones while getting your ass whooped (that’d be me….Damn computer!!!) in Madden 08′. I do feel that I need to hip myself to P.U.T.S. a bit more before I delve into Thes One’s discography for a more indepth review…but hey, I gotta’ start somewhere, right? For evidence of my praise, be sure to check out the aforementioned “Hy-Vee“, “Gate City Savings & Loan” and my favorite “F & F Daily C” from “Lifestyle….”. Again, this album is not for everyone but it’s a solid instrumental album from an established beatmaker that deserves some ink. Peep it HERE.

Eric,

I’ve always had the impression that PUTS are one of those groups that are big in Europe but pretty much unappreciated in the US (not sure where I got that from though…)

I strongly recommend that you check through their back catalogue and there really is some excellent material there. Question In The Form Of An Answer is probably the most complete album, but seriously they’re all worth copping. ‘Youth Explosion’ from Question… is a banger!

Cheers

next step was absolutely perfect from a beat point of view for me. I’d put PUTS in my top ten favourite hip-hop groups of all time. And dan, i totally get what you mean, i thought PUTS were loved in the UK but underappreciated in US too, proba cos they get no coverage over there.

I loved this album when it came out too. Being a big thes one fan i knew this album from the off and purchased it in tis first month, great work.
