Seems that I skipped a song from yesterday. Nice catch goes to….no one. Good to know people are on the ball. So we’ll start off with the track I missed yesterday and go one. Hopefully everyone is enjoying this shit as much as I did……

Dark Sun Riders – Time To Build (Ultra Marsalis Remix) (Island Records, from the “Time To Build b/w “Vibes Of The Pro Black”, 1996)

The Dark Sun Riders were a side group, or more like a new group that Brother J from the X-Clan started after that group dissolved in the mid 90′s. Brother J kind of brought this crew out of nowhere with “Time To Build” being the crews first single. Like his previous crew, X-Clan, this jam is equipped with a dope beat that just rolls along while Brother J spits his neo Afrocentric views. I want to say this is the same sample Kno of Cunninlynguists used on the track “The Park”, but I could be wrong with that. You pretty much know what this track is going to sound like before you hear it, lyrically and musically. I can say I like the remix much better than the funked out space shit sounding original version. - Trav

De La Soul – Ego Trippin’ III (Tommy Boy, from the “Ego Trippin’ II” maxi single, 1993)

Armed with a new beat and new lyrics, “Ego Trippin’ (Part Three)” almost eclipses the original version. The beat is classic Prince Paul, full of horns, strings, and keys thrown together to make this stand up to any of Paul’s past classics. De La has always snuck in classic, but very often unheard of tracks such as this (Clear Lake Auditorium anyone?). The original version of this song (not the Ultra track) took shots at the flavor of the moment in hip hop at the time and some of the pop-rap that was running amuck at the time (sound familiar?). Part three has some of the same lyrical concepts, mocking the gun-toting MC’s in their first “warm-up” verse. – Original Philaflava Post (which I think is me)

Trav’s extended notes, After doing some research on this, it was Spearhead X and NOT Prince Paul who did this joint. Shame on me. For what it’s worth, this is probably one of my favorite all-time De La joints and is found on probably the best Maxi single ever released.

Del – Undisputed Champs feat Pep Love & Q-Tip (Elektra, found “Wrongplace b/w “Don’t Forget” & “Undisputed Champs” 12 inch single, 1993)

I can’t argue with the “Undisputed Champs” being selected at all. At one time, before the dawn of the internet, this joint was mad hard to find. It would long be one of my most sought after tracks in the late 90′s. I finally came across it on a mix tape I bought in Salt Lake City at the “Hip Hop Shop” (I think that was the name for it, maybe it’s just what I called it). It had the “Soul On Ice” remix, “Poppa Large (East coast Remix) and “Undisputed Champs”, so needless to say, it got a lot of play. This song just has so much going for it. For one, Q-Tip’s verse was one that I used to kick to myself quite often while working on assembly line at Hewlett Packard, making disk drives. Surprising enough, Del is responsible for the beat. To me, this song and the De La joint are what I would think about when making this list. Great songs, that aren’t necessarily easy to find. - Trav

Demastas – Feel No Guilt feat Nine(London Records, from the 12 inch “Feel No Guilt” b/w “Ain’t No Sunshine”, 1999)

I know very little Demastas. Some how they were tied to the whole Nine/Jesse West camp and I can’t quite remember. Both artists can be found on this track, with Nine providing a verse and some adlibs and Jesse West providing the beat. Demastas consisted of three members and only dropped this Twelve and another for the b-side, which was found on this as a remix. They weren’t great MC’s, but put Nine in the mix and throw it all over the type of Jesse West is best (not) known for, then use a Audio Two vocal sample for the hook, and you have a slept on hip hop banger.

Diamond D – Hiatus (remix) feat Cru (Mercury, found on the promo 12 inch, 1997)

Anyone who read Eric’s “It’s Gotta Be The Beats” series, that featured my top 25 all-time hip hop beats, knows that I love this joint. So much that I personally don’t think of it as “obscure” at all, but it might have snuck under a few people’s radar. The original was no slouch in the least, but the strings to this joint are just…..dayum, not sure if I can find the words for their sound. To top it off, you have Cru jump on the mic with Diamond, and it makes for one of the better songs of the post “Golden Age” 90′s.

Diamond D -Sally Got A One Track Mind (Showbiz Remix), (Chemistry, found on the “Sally Got A One Track Mind” 12 inch, 1992) **FIXED**

The Showbiz remix was a track I wasn’t very familiar with until this list came out. Since I was never much of a vinyl collector, any 12 inch singles I got were of the tape v
ariety and those were never as widespread as the vinyl singles. I never picked this one up, so I never really heard it at all. I have to say this version is as good if not better than the original, and that’s saying a lot, since I was a big fan of the original. Showbiz just brings some slammin’ drums that scream “HIP HOP”. Then throw in a horn stab in there with a flute sample and this song is every bit as good as any other joint on this list. – Trav

DMX – Can’t Touch The Kid (Unreleased track, 1995)

A lot of tracks from artists who make it into the mainstream after years of floundering in the underground have some sentimental value, but usually lack much in the way of good quality. However, DMX is one of the artists whose material before his big mainstream break, can actually be compared to his official releases. Enter “Can’t Touch the Kid,” possibly the finest example of Dam’s talents. A booming beat, followed by DMX delivering three terrific verses, with clever wordplay and a rough growl DMX gave us his most superb track of maybe his life. – Original Philaflava post

Dre Dog – The Ave (In-A-Minute Records, from “The Ave” 12 inch, 1993) ***FIXED***

Dre Dog aka Andre Nickatina has always been one of the most talented, original and criminally slept on West Coast MC’s. ‘The Ave’ was the first single from his In-A-Minute Records 1993 debut album ‘The New Jim Jones’. A classic track from an equally classic and groundbreaking album Dre uses this song to reminisce on his younger years, neighbourhood, fake friends, materialistic women and everyday life in the ghetto. Something which sets this song apart for me is that despite of the laid back and mellow beat Dre maintains the same nihilism and anger he displays throughout the album. His fatalistic attitude to all the social problems he describes makes this track all the more powerful and memorable. This has to be one of the most quotable early 90s tracks, so here are just a few of my favorites. – Original Philaflava Post

E Money Bags – Regulate feat Prodigy & Majesty from Live Squad (1998?)

You don’t really hear much about E Money Bags, who was an obscure Queensbridge producer/MC in his own right. He worked with a lot of the Queensbridge regulars such as Tragedy, Mobb, Nas and others. He had an album from 1999, entitled “In E Money Bags We Trust”, which a different version with Capone appears. This version has Prodigy and Majesty from The Live Squad. The original is much better than the version found on the album. It’s unfortunate that E was gunned down in 2001. - Trav

Eightball – What The Fuck Eightball (Umm Recordings, from the 12 inch single “What The Fuck Is The Eightball”, 1993)

I know nothing about this track, but it’s dope as fuck. It kind of sounds like an early Sticky Fingaz. Some traditional New York early 90′s shit. Rough lyrics and the beat stands out about as much as the rhymes. Some bluesy guitar that is sped up to give the listener an amped feelings. I’d like to know more about this shit and the artist. Ignore the Eightball & MJG tag on this, it’s not the same dude. - Trav

EPMD – Brothers From Brentwood L.I. (Def Jam, found on the “Crossover” b/w “Brothers FroM Brentwood L.I.” 12 inch, 1992)

This was another joint that before the internet days, if you didn’t snatch up the Crossover 12 inch on either tape or vinyl, you wouldn’t hear this track. I did snatch up that maxi single mainly just for this track. I’m guessing this wasn’t good enough to make the “Business Never Personal” LP, but I could argue this track was better than three or four tracks on that album, which happens to be my favorite EPMD, so that is saying something. Armed with crazy noise on the production tip, the LI heroes just do what they do best, kick the smooth lines over a dope beat. – Trav
