Metermaids – “Nightlife”

“Build me a horizon out of promises and matches / We’ll smash it with our bare hands and compare the damage”

The Song:

The Metermaids envelop us in their unique brand of hip-hop with the title track from their debut album, Nightlife. Backed by a hard-hitting beat that enraptures listeners in a repetitive motif, emcees Sentence and Swell expose an emotional honesty that cuts through the complex issues of life that are so often over-simplified into black and white. In one of his more poignant moments, Sentence raps, “Build me a horizon out of promises and matches / We’ll smash it with our bare hands and compare the damage / We’ll talk like we both don’t have guns drawn / And I’ll fold up your words till they read like a love song / Beautiful, soothing, useless, etcetera / Could have been worse but it could have been better / I write my past on the buildings in cracks / Some stand and some collapse.”

The Background:

The Metermaids are two New York emcees, Swell and Sentence, who met through NYC’s underground hip-hop scene in 2006. Embodying the convergence of indie rock and hip-hop, the Metermaids represent a new sound in crossover music that bends and melds genres, unveiling new possibilities both lyrically and musically. After hooking up with the producer Matt Stine of 27 Sound they released their debut EP in 2006. The duo then hit the road touring with the likes of Brand Nubian, Atmosphere, Sage Francis, Fabulous, Lady Bug Mecca (Digable Planets), The Lox, and Camp Lo. In 2008, with an arsenal of touring under their belt, the Metermaids launched their first full-length Nightlife, a raucous mash up of gritty break beats, heartfelt lyrics, and a touch of rock n’ roll. Nightlife is currently available on 27 Sound Entertainment.

“Its been a long time…..I shouldn’t have left you…..without some dope beats to step to”

Whats goin on folks. Hopefully the Fresh Produce series hasn’t been forgotten already. When you wear so many different hats like I do sometimes things don’t go according to schedule. I’ve still been busy though. Getting ready for the trip to NY…still making beats, and remixing. So lets see what I have for yall today

1. BooCocky –

They might not stand out to most folks, but my favorite part of the beat are the church bells…..kinda reminds me of something you’d hear on a vintage Pastor Troy album…..WHAT DO YOU MEAN YOU DON’T KNOW WHO PASTOR TROY IS!!!!!!

2. Born To Wander –

Did I mention that I like bass?

3. Get Rare –

To producers out there….don’t be afraid to layer your claps, and then don’t be afraid to slide one slightly to the left or to the right….gives a cool effect if you ask me.

Now here are a couple of remixes. I’m interested to see the feedback I get from them. I remixed a couple of rappers that seem to rub the online fans the wrong

1. Mane – Stoopid Remix prod by MIDIMarc.mp3

2. Boy – BirdWalk Remix prod by MIDIMarc.mp3

Tokyo Cigar Presents: The 9 Diagram Phoenix

Wu tang clan is the best to ever do it. The rhymes, swagger, ingenuity and all around funny shit they brought to the game is unmatched in terms of skill. I’ve been a die hard fan ever since I heard “method man” in 93 and I’ve been that dude that argues on their behalf intensely ( ask anyone I know )

With this project I just wanted to have the Wu rocking over some extra grimy tracks. It’s a throwback in terms of the sound but futuristic in terms of vibe. I laced some heavy drums and dark vibes to bring out the hardness of the rhymes. THIS IS NOT AN INDUSTRY SOUNDING JOINT. Its straight lo fi and gritty. MTV cats need to fall back. This is only built for my peoples that know what a TDK tape looks like.

So grab your fat bags of skunk and white owl blunts and go get lifted, then grab a forty and a shorty and go stick it.
