Wee Boo Foolish – Tiger Boogs b/w Time Will Tell

by Travis on August 19, 2009

In an attempt to get back to being an actual blog where I write my thoughts on music and bring original material back to the board, I decided it was time to throw another 12 inch single on to my turntable and talk about it for a bit. There was no advanced thought on this post, I just reached into the closest crate to my computer in my still unfinished “music room” and my WYDU office and pulled out the first dope thing I found. That dope 12 inch, well it’s the first single that I know of from the Brooklyn based group, Wee Bee Foolish.

Consisting of Ken Boogaloo, Yeshua DaPoED, and DJ Bless, the crew was part of the indie scene that busted onto the scene in the late 90′s. Hip Hop heads had already be introduced to Yesh, when he dropped a Fondle ‘Em classic EP with Siah, which Ken Boogaloo had a guest appearance on as well. The single, “Tiger Boogs” b/w “Time Will Tell”, dropped in ’98, two years after The Visulaz EP. I’m not totally sure if Yesh was an “official” member of Wee Bee Foolish at this time, as he was still making music with Siah (Interview on WYDU), but the track “Tiger Boogs” would appear on the group’s ’02 release, Brighton Beach Memoirs.

The A-Side consists of Ken Boogaloo’s song, “Tiger Boogs,” which is produced by DJ Bless. Everything about this track screams classic NY indie hip hop from the late 90′s. DJ Bless lives up to his name and comes up with a funky track that is rich in that era’s sound. The drums bang like a cheap hooker that was just given $500 bucks to do her thang. Bless also utilizes some nice samples and an ill muffled horn sound that really adds to the track. Lyrically, Ken Boogaloo comes correct with direct and precise lines that would clown 90% of the myspace rappers these days. Well worth checking out this single on the A-Side merits alone. It consists of the traditional set up of clean, dirty and instrumental.

The B-Side features Yeshua and Ken on the track “Time Will Tell,” which was produced by Yeshua himself. This track reminds me a lot of the joints that you found on his EP with Siah. A little more dark, busier and “thicker”, “Time Will Tell” is a dope track in it’s own right. Hollowing drums dominate another short horn stab sample with some darker keys that come in an out of the track.

This single will give any 90′s cat a vinyl woody, as it just drips with that NYC indie hip hop sound from that era. Banging drums and poignant samples bring the listener back to the time that 30 something cats will reminisce over….

Yeah man, I've been bit by the bug. Lately though it's been a lot more of the old soul, funk, and jazz stuff than hip hop. I'm sure I'll go back and forth in the future though.
