The Goats – Tricks of the Shade

by OSnapple on October 15, 2009

So for whatever reason this album was on my mind when i woke up this morning, and the funny thing was Trav posted this album almost exactly 3 years ago to the day.

See the original post HERE

The Goats are known for their political twist on hip hop. Unlike the political hip hop of today the Goats were able to deliver their message in a much more fun and upbeat way. Although this album “Tricks of the Shade” came out in 1992, my first listen was probably in 1998 and I still rock it to this day. Another enjoyable thing about this album is the use of skits to tell a vivid story. I’ve heard many albums that overuse skits and it can dampen the overall feel of the album, but the Goats in my opinion successfully used skits to enhance their music.

The Goats are just one of the many reasons I respect the Philly Hip Hop Scene.

Some good news is in 2007 The Goats released an album named “The Goats – out-takes, Remixes, etc”.

You can grab a copy of this album from their official website

Most songs never released before,
Here is a list of some of the songs included:

oatie kato’s solo stuff (beautiful… backing vocals by Lena Anderson)
lady boom boom
quarters (into the brooklyn night)
people’s history

goats stuff (instrumentals, great remixes and live versions from tricks of the shade including….
Typical American (LIVE! super rocking)
Do the Digs Dug (LIVE! super rocking)
Todd Terry Remix – Do the Digs Dug

two songs oaTie worked on from the second album

(and five tracks from the goats original demo tape including the first song they ever wrote)
including undgerground hit “i ride the bus”

I am going to try and pick this up over the weekend and I’ll let you guys know what I think next week.

Man, Tricks of the Shade is such a great album. And, for some reason, I dug those skits too (probably because of the political nature).

Nice one, didn't know about that outtakes LP or their site. Tricks of the Shade I was rocking from the drop. The followup not so much.
