The leaves are turning colors, the air has a crisp chill to it, and the days are growing shorter. That means one thing; winter is on it’s way. What a better way to batten down the hatches for that pending shitty weather than with a hot track? Two favorites of mine join forces to bring one of the better tracks I’ve heard this year. The Detroit MC teams up with Damu The Fudgemunk, who is 1/2 of indie/ungerground favs Y Society and a 1/3 of Panacea. The two come together to release the song “When Winter Comes,” which combines great rhymes over a great beat.
Damu brings a beat that incorporates a funky drum break, they hit hard and often, providing a funky backbone for Damu to layer more flavors. Then he hooks up shrill piano sample and intertwines that with a vocal sample that just adds to the whole flavor of the track. Toss some horns here and there and it’s a beat that should get the heads nodding, no doubt. The beat brings the listener to the mood of a cozy winter day by the warmth of a fire type of thing. It’s not dark in the least that I sometimes think of from a winter theme, but hey, nothing wrong with that. Having listened to Damu’s work for a couple years now, I’d venture to say that the beat he hooked up for Buff is one of my favorites from him, nothing short of pure dopeness.
Buff1 has been among my favorite MCs in the game for the past few years, with his albums “Pure” and “There’s Only One”, he’s been a model of consistency with his Detroit brethren having his back. Buff is one that is always paints vivid pictures with his rhymes, adding complex lines and making it all seem so effortless, much like he does on “When Winter Comes”. Once again he takes the listener on a journey through his rhymes:
The colder it gets the older ya feel
ya bones feel tense like ya over the hill
but really it’s all mental when approaching the chills
you just got to be prepared, change your focus for real notice
what the signs are saying
ain’t no time for playing
it’s all live in real life ain’t no time delayin…
Just the way Buff travels through his rhymes and flows puts him up there with the best in the biz in my humble opinion. The lyrics address man’s ability to make it through the tough times and do his damn thing, at least in my interpretation.
Hopefully we see more from these two in the future, as it’s obvious they share some chemistry. Buff compliments Damu’s beat and Damu makes Buff sound even more live than he normally does. A very nice track that is sure to get more play (even though I’ve played it at least ten times tonight).
