RIP Derek B: "We get paid in pounds, not in dollars"….

by Travis on November 17, 2009

We’ve had a rough year for hip hop performers and their deaths, but for some reason, this one kinda hits me harder than most of the them. I guess it’s because Derek B was part of that initial group of hip hop artists I got into the fall of ’88. I remember seeing his video for “Bad Young Brother”, and went and bought the tape at a local K-mart, Fred Meyer, or Shopko or something like that. The album, “Bullet From A Gun”, contained several self anointed classics like the title track, “Goodgroove”, “Bad Young Brother”, and “Rock The Beat”.

Signed to Profile, Derek B was also EZ Q, the MC of the “group”. This fact I think lost me a bet later on in life as it was close to ten years that I finally figured out that Derek B was both the DJ and EZ Q the MC. He would do the lyrics, the scratches and the beats, which were drum heavy, as many beats were in the day, but he had that loud, obnoxious “noise”, that I loved so much ala the Bomb Squad. Coming from London, he was one of, if not the first to gain much fame in the American hip hop landscape. A true pioneer in that sense.

RIP Derek B, thanks for the music……

Never knew that he was the Dj and the rapper, pretty skilled brother in that regard. I commented on several sites that have offered their condolences to Derek B.
