What's New In Dart's iPod #1 AKA It's A New Year

by Staff on January 12, 2010

This week I’ll be reviewing six new projects that recently hit the ‘net/bloggerverse and/or will be landing on store shelves soon in the following order: Bisco Smith “The Broadcast”, Dillon & Paten Locke “Studies In Hunger”, Illum Sphere “Long Live The Plan”, Madlib & Guilty Simpson “The Medicine Show Vol.1: Before The Verdict”, Ron Dance “Some Guys Win It All EP” and X.O,’s “1.1.10″. For those of you unfamiliar to my review blog format, I don’t rate albums on a scale or assign them a numerical value out of 5 or 10, instead I merely answer the all important question of “Is it worth buying or not?”. Here’s how my recently revised “Cop It Or Not” ratings system breaks down below:

Opinions be damned. This particular project has no redeeming qualities whatsoever and should come with a Surgeon General’s warning and/or a biohazard sticker. It should only be handled by hazmat teams or bomb/demolition squads. To quote Common & Canibus, this album is your worst nightmare squared.

Oh No! This CD is a drink coaster/table balancer/doorstop/gerbil/hamster room divider/frisbee/discus/makeshift shield/last ditch choice for a visor/alternate shuriken choice. Sell this shit to whoever is dumb enough to buy it from you.

Maeby (Maybe)! Depending on your own set of personal preferences you might like this joint. Give it a listen first to see if it’s in your lane or not.

Mos Def! Cop the album when it drops…’Nuff said!

Best Jawns: Tune In, Morning Breath & Railroads

Meh: Vibrations, Time Zones, Transmission Live, Never Knew, Crooked Hearts, Fresh Water & Circuit Breaker

Hot Garbage: N/A

Dart’s Take: This album just wasn’t made for me. It’s okay, far form terrible but I don’t feel the urge to play this album again down the line or put it into my iPod Touch. Listen for yourself because you might like it. It’s kinda Electronica inspired & Aesop Rocky at points but it “The Broadcast” just didn’t reach me personally. I give it a maybe. Look for it to drop January 19th, 2010.

Best Jawns: Hot Mess, Spin, Identify, Stay Relative, Concentrate, Honey, Shake, Rosie Perez, Love Died, Good Lookin Out Pops & Goodbye

Meh: N/A

Hot Garbage: N/A

Dart’s Take: Dillon & Paten Locke’s “Studies In Hunger” dropped way back on December 8th but due to snafu’s on the part of myself Domination Recordings didn’t hit me with the LP thinking that I was gonna shut down Poisonous Paragraphs & retire. I didn’t receive this album until after I wrote “What’s New In Dart’s iPod #109″ way back on December 18th.

In any event, this album bangs from beginning to end. Dillon’s bars complement Paten Locke’s production perfectly. Guest appearances from P. Locke, H20, Stacey Epps, Willie Evans Jr., Akrobatik & Cool Calm Pete make this a must hear project. I included in my Top 200 LP’s of 2009 list already. Cop it. Mos def.

Best Jawns: Long Live The Plan, Better Late State, Never Lie Twice, Psycho, Chasing The Midnight Moth, Shadowman, and Psycho (Samiyam remix)

Meh: N/A

Hot Garbage: N/A

Dart’s Take: Illum Sphere’s “Long Live The Plan EP” dropped in late December so I couldn’t review it “What’s New In Dart’s iPod #109″ either. This Dubstep/Glitch Hop/Wonky/Abstract project contains 7 tracks and is a must for serious beatheads. Being that it’s hard to get (and often sold out) your best chances are to cop it from Boomkat or Fat City Recordings. Good luck! I give it a mos def.

Best Jawns: Arrangement, Ode To The Ghetto (OJ Simpson Remix), Yikes (OJ Simpson Remix), Further, Lucky Guy, Pigs (OJ Simpson Remix), Life Goes By, Get Bitches (OJ Simpson Remix), The Exclusive, Robbery (OJ Simpson Remix), Kill ‘Em (OJ Simpson Remix), The Paper, I Must Love You (OJ Simpson Remix), Looking For Trouble, Young Guns, My Moment (OJ Simpson Remix) and American Dream & Future (OJ Simpson Remix)

Meh: N/A

Hot Garbage: N/A

Dart’s Take: This is a remix project featuring Guilty Simpson verses, some new material from the upcoming OJ Simpson (Guilty Simpson/Madlib) project in addition to two previously unreleased interludes featuring MED & the immortal J Dilla. Buy this shit. Mos def.

Best Jawns: Some Guys Win ‘Em All, The Good Times, Get Like Me, Make Ur Way Up, Almost Lost Detroit & Ron Dance Can’t Rap

Meh: I Must Confess

Hot Garbage: N/A

Dart’s Take: Ron Dance is part of the Detroit collective 101 alongside Ro Spit (AKA Octane AKA DJ Phrikshun) & Marv Won (AKA Marv The Bearded Battle Rappin’ Fat Killah). This EP “Some Guys Win ‘Em All” comes after Ro Spit’s “Oh Shit! Project” and Marv Won’s “The Way Of The Won”. It’s looking like Detroit will continue to occupy the top spot in Hip Hop well into the new decade based on this effort. Look for the 101 mixtape coming soon & check this out here now. I give it a recommended maybe.

Best Jawns: 1.1.10, Fast Life, Lime Light, Take Home, You Not Like Me, Black Broadway, She Posed To, We Are The 1′s, Crucial, I Want In, Blah Blah, City Loves Me Back, Do It, City Shit and How Does It Feel

Meh: N/A

Hot Garbage: N/A

Dart’s Take: X.O. is 1/3rd of Diamond District (who dropped a Top 10 LP of ’09) as well as making 2 of the best projects of ’09 solo (“Monumental” & “Realmatic”). How does X.O. follow up a dominant ’09? By opening 2010 with a ridiculous free LP with production by Oddisee & AB the producer and features from Tabi Bonney & Raheem DeVaughn amongst others. All I can say is “Goddamn!”. I give X.O.’s “1.1.10″ a mos def. Download it now
