I’ve recently been wondering what happened to Encore. He released a couple albums in the early part of last decade and then kind of disappeared. His first LP from 2000, listed below, was on Dan the Automator’s now defunct record label, 75 Ark. I remember reading an article about how he wasn’t too happy being on Dan’s label for some reason, or at least had some reservations.

Encore’s 2nd LP, The Layover, was released by Hieroglyphics and I was hoping he’d catch on there. The Layover was a pretty solid album and seemed to be laying a foundation for the future. Unfortunately, this was his last release (you can still purchase The Layover on

Encore also has one of those names that isn’t all that conducive for internet searches. I looked around and I haven’t been able to find anything new on the MC. There’s nothing on the Hiero site anymore and I was unable to find even a MySpace page, so I’m pretty sure he’s no longer actively recording music.

Listening to Self Preservation for the first time in years, I’m surprised at how well it holds up. I don’t remember being overly impressed 10 years ago (holy crap, can’t believe this LP is that old), but I’m putting this back in rotation. The production is real nice and handled by a guy called The Architect (also not a great internet search name) who I’m not familiar with and was unable to find more information on. Encore is a dope emcee and more than capable on the mic and the album is well worth a listen or ten. Check it out.

".084" is a CLASSIC joint. What man in his 20's hasn't driven drunk? And Encore's joint "Waterworld" on the first Handsome Boy album is breathtaking.

Architect forms the duo Homeliss Derilex with Grand the Visitor and he's been one of the best underground producers out of Cali for a long time now. He also worked with Planet Asia a lot

"It's Time" was a dope track too.

I'll need to go back to that Handsome Boy Modeling School LP and check that out. It's been a long time since I've listened to that.

e-digga – Thanks for the info man. I'll check it out.
