What's New In Dart's iPod #12 AKA Let The Sunshine In

by Staff on April 11, 2010

This week I’ll be reviewing ten new projects that recently hit the ‘net/bloggerverse and/or will be landing on store shelves soon in the following order: Cypress Hill “Rise Up”, Damu The Fudgemunk “How It Should Sound Vols. 1 & 2″, Jneiro Jarel  “Android Love Mayhem EP”, Little Brother “Leftback”,  LMNO “Next In Line” Onra “Long Distance EP”, Ras G & The Afrikan Space Program & Samiyam “L.A. Series #3 10X10X3″, Roc Marciano “Marcberg”, Take “Only Mountain” and  TRUTHLiVE “Patience”. For those of you new to this blog, I don’t rate albums on a scale or assign them a numerical value out of 5 or 10, instead I merely answer the all important question of “Is it worth buying or not?”. Here’s how my patented “Cop It Or Not” ratings system breaks down below:

Opinions be damned. This particular project has no redeeming qualities whatsoever and should come with a Surgeon General’s warning and/or a biohazard sticker. It should only be handled by hazmat teams or bomb/demolition squads. To quote Common & Canibus, this album is your worst nightmare squared.

Oh No! This CD is a drink coaster/table balancer/doorstop/gerbil/hamster room divider/frisbee/discus/makeshift shield/last ditch choice for a visor/alternate shuriken choice. Sell this shit to whoever is dumb enough to buy it from you.

Maeby (Maybe)! Depending on your own set of personal preferences you might like this joint. Give it a listen first to see if it’s in your lane or not.

Mos Def! Cop the album when it drops…’Nuff said.

Best Jawns: It Ain’t Nothin’, Light It Up, Pass the Dutch, Bang Bang, K.U.S.H., Get ‘em Up, Take My Pain, Armed & Dangerous, Shut ‘em Down and Armada Latina

Meh: Rise Up, Get It Anyway, Carry Me Away, I Unlimited and Trouble Seeker

Hot Garbage: N/A

Dart’s Take: I heard Cypress Hill’s new album. I heard them doing things over beats that didn’t fit them at all. I heard the rock collabos with Tom Morello & Mike Shinoda. I heard that hipster beat they spit on (?). This album sounded eerily similar to Run DMC’s “Crown Royal” album where there were a lot of tracks that just didn’t fit the group.

My promo copy was clean. I got an edited press copy of a Cypress Hill album. Cypress Hill. Edited. Amanda Bassa feels my pain as well. I give “Rise Up” a maybe. The songs that worked are dope. The ones that didn’t? Ugh.

Best Jawns: Start Here, Another Introduction, Tea Thyme, Clap & Form Your Soul, Figment, Home Seek Home, Straight From The Harp, Rock Climbing [Byte 1], It’s Called The Chill Out, Gone With The Sunset, Bills Be Gone [Pawt 2], Only One Me, Judgement Day, Dream Catcher, How It Should Sound, You Know Who!, Movin’ On, Not So Young Anymore, Fabrega’s Discotecas, Gestation, Don’t Fail Me Now, Man With Bindle [Pawt 1], Hogs On The Hill [Pretty Sneaky], At Your Request [Spinna VS Joc], It Wasn’t On Earth, Boomerang Luck, Gettin’ & Steppin and Start Here Instro

Meh: N/A

Hot Garbage: N/A

Dart’s Take: On April 13th, Damu The Fudgemunk will drop 28 track instrumental opus on all of our heads like an atom bomb. It will leave an enormous crater and the blast radius will be ridiculous. Mos def.

Best Jawns: Black Hole, Swift Hovercrafts, Lurk (Part 2), Android Romance 1 & 2, Going Home, Gosohaurd, Black Blocks (ElectroSonicFreeRoboticS) and Shadoze

Meh: N/A

Hot Garbage: N/A

Dart’s Take: Jneiro Jarel AKA Dr. Who Dat has crafted yet another spaced out project full of crazy ass beats with some vocals over them. If you can find a way to front on tracks like “Android Romance 1 & 2″, “Gosohaurd”, “Black Blocks” or “Shadoze” then I don’t know what to say to you. Recommended maybe. Jneiro Jarel’s “Android Love Mayhem EP” drops April 13th.

Best Jawns: Curtain Call, Table For Two, Tigallo For Dolo, Revenge, So Cold, Second Chances, Go Off Go On, What We Are, After The Party, Two Step Blues, Get Enough pt. 2, Before The Night Is Over and 24

Meh: N/A

Hot Garbage: N/A

Dart’s Take: This is Little Brother’s final album as a group. It’s truly an end of en era. I played this album nonstop for about 3 hours not too long ago and it’s an excellent goodbye project. Unfortunately, it comprises of two (dope) remixes of the total 13 jawns. With that being said I had “Curtain Call”, “Table For Two”, “Tigallo For Dolo”, “Revenge”, “Go Off Go On”, “What We Are”, “Get Enough Pt. 2″ and “24″ on repeat. I give “Leftback” a highly recommended maybe just short of a mos def.

Best Jawns: Blaze Of Glory, Get Up, Good Book, Graced By Grace, In Love, Innocence, LD On The Cut, Next In Line, No Jam No DJ, On The Move, Resilient and See You Later

Meh: N/A

Hot Garbage: N/A

Dart’s Take: LMNO’s 4th LP of 2010 pairs him with one of my favorite producers, Dert. This is one of his best efforts of the year as well. If you cop an LMNO LP this year then it’s between this one & “Push That Work” (or both). I give “Next In Line” a recommended maybe.

Best Jawns: Long Distance, Long Distance (Instrumental), Rock On, High Hopes, High Hopes (Instrumental) and Oper8tor

Meh: N/A

Hot Garbage: N/A

Dart’s Take: Wooooo! © Ric Flair. After hearing “Long Distance”, “Rock On”, “High Hopes” & “Oper8tor” I went and pre-ordered the LP. Cotdayum this shit was funky. If you follow me on Twitter I’m sure you already know all about this EP 7 the upcoming album. In any event, highly recommended maybe as it barely missed being a mos def. I’m hoping the album will get that distinction later on.

Best Jawns: Flight Delay, Ourtrill, Breakfast, Fishsticks, Brad and Space

Meh: N/A

Hot Garbage: N/A

Dart’s Take: COTDAYUM. Cop this shit yesterday. Mos def.

Best Jawns: Pimptro, It’s A Crime, Whateva Whateva, Raw Deal, We Do It, Snow, Ridin’ Around, Panic, Thug’s Prayer, Pop, Jungle Fever, Don Shit, Marcberg, Hide My Tears and Shoutro

Meh: N/A

Hot Garbage: N/A

Dart’s Take: I’ve been listening to this album for about a month now and I don’t see myself get bored with it. Ever. After about a week of playing it nonstop I was convinced that this album will go down as a modern Hip Hop classic. Now that I’m close to a month removed from that initial assessment I’m even more convinced that I was right from jump. “Marcberg” is already one of the best releases of 2010 and it didn’t even drop yet!

Hats off to Roc Marciano, The UN, MoSS and whoever else contributed to this project. This would get 5 mics in The Source from the Mind Squad easily back when their name meant something. Mos def. Cop “Marcberg” on April 20th. Trust me on this one.

Best Jawns: Before You Think, Neon Beams, Horizontal Figuration, Crystallia, Don’t Look Now, Quartz for Amber, If We Don’t All Go Insane, Begin End Begin, Incredibright, Creosote, Paper Garden, Implosions and Juniper

Meh: N/A

Hot Garbage: N/A

Dart’s Take: Yet another dope instrumental album that only beatheads will be up on. You already know the spiel about “if you’re a fan of..” so if you’re in the center of that particular Venn Diagram you already know what to do. Overall I give Take’s “Only Mountain” a highly recommended maybe. Look for it to drop on April 20th.

Best Jawns: Proper Context, Ready Set Go, Poetry In MOtion, Remind Rewind, It’s Easy, The Bush Years (We Don’t Need), Catalyst For Change, You Do You, Digital Courage and Nature Of Man

Meh: That Dude and Patience

Hot Garbage: N/A

Dart’s Take: This was a pretty good offering from TRUTHLiVE overall. Tight bars and all production was handled by the incomparable Jake One. There were a couple of misses but this project is worth you put cash down on. Guest appearances from Von Pea, Donwill, Finale, Ras Kass and Moe Green help to round out the project. “Patience” gets a recommended maybe.

regarding LB — aren’t “two step blues” and “after the party” old songs?

that’s somewhat disappointing to not have entirely new material on the final release from them…

why always the same pictures of mos def and all this stuff? this is very confusing and annoying, though i’m a fan of this blog.

LeftBack is just really an EP of stuff that didn’t make the GetBack album…

I am more than happy with it, some beautiful tracks on it…

@ Daniel: It’s explained in the intro. Also the better the picture of maybe, the higher the album recommendation. I hope that cleared up any problems. Spacing might be an issue, however…
