What's New In Dart's iPod #13 AKA ALONGWAYTOGO © Gang Starr

by Eric on April 23, 2010

This week I’ll be reviewing twelve new projects that recently hit the ‘net/bloggerverse and/or will be landing on store shelves soon in the following order: Approach & Ill Poetic “Aloe Park”, Berry Weight “Music For Imaginary Movies”, B.o.B “B.o.B presents The Adventures Of Bobby Ray” , Clutchy Hopkins “The Story Teller”, D-Man “Back To The Future: Return To The Past”, Grooveman Spot “Change Situations”,  H.W. “A Year’s Worth Of Worry”, Kurupt “Streetlights”, Madlib “Medicine Show No.4: 420 Chalice All Stars”, Onra “Long Distance”,  Suff Daddy “The Gin Diaries” and Tokimonsta “Cosmic Intoxication EP”. For those of you new to this blog, I don’t rate albums on a scale or assign them a numerical value out of 5 or 10, instead I merely answer the all important question of “Is it worth buying or not?”. Here’s how my patented “Cop It Or Not” ratings system breaks down below:

Opinions be damned. This particular project has no redeeming qualities whatsoever and should come with a Surgeon General’s warning and/or a biohazard sticker. It should only be handled by hazmat teams or bomb/demolition squads. To quote Common & Canibus, this album is your worst nightmare squared.

Oh No! This CD is a drink coaster/table balancer/doorstop/gerbil/hamster room divider/frisbee/discus/makeshift shield/last ditch choice for a visor/alternate shuriken choice. Sell this shit to whoever is dumb enough to buy it from you.

Maeby (Maybe)! Depending on your own set of personal preferences you might like this joint. Give it a listen first to see if it’s in your lane or not.

Mos Def! Cop the album when it drops…’Nuff said.

Best Jawns: Life Aquatic, How Are U?, Honeywell, Where U From?, Redbull, Xperience, Watermark, In All, Tired, Ivory Julian, Of All-Time and Mutombo

Meh: A great amount of Approach’s bars…

Hot Garbage: N/A

Dart’s Take: The beats? Sick. Guest appearances from Ill Poetic, Tajai, Black Spade, Dessa, Miles Bonny, Reggie B. and Stik Figa among many others? Bananas. Approach was the weak link in this project to me but “Aloe Park” is definitely worth hearing. I need this instrumental album. Read that Ill Po? Recommended maybe status. It’s out now.

Best Jawns: Yeti’s Lament, Equations, The Day Nothing Happened, Walking By Your Side, Magician’s Assistant, The Lotus, The Way Of The Dodo, Heart Shaped Rock, Krakatoa, Cowboys And Indians and Sky Below

Meh: N/A

Hot Garbage: N/A

Dart’s Take: Berry Weight is a duo from overseas consisting of a producer/musician/instrumentalist & a vocalist. This music is a mix between early Portishead, the first Esthero album “Breath From Another”, Bjork “Homogenic” & the slept on classic opus The Controls “One Hundred”. If I need to explain it to you further, those are all good things to be compared to in my book.

I predict that Berry Weight’s “Music For Imaginary Movies” will have a long stay in my iPod Touch. I give it a highly recommended maybe. It dropped way back on January 19th but I slept. Don’t be like me

Best Jawns: Don’t Let Me Fall, Nothin’ On You, Past My Shades, Airplanes, Bet I, Ghost In The Machine, The Kids, Fame, Lovelier Than You, 5th Dimension, Airplanes Pt. 2 and Satellite

Meh: Magic and Higher

Hot Garbage: N/A

Dart’s Take: I’m having much the same feeling about this album that I did when I first heard Kid Cudi’s tales of tightpants partying, lonely weed ingestion & night terrors…an angry underground backpacker rappity rap ass dude shouldn’t be liking this as much as I am, should I? Fuck it, I DID. I do. Why lie? This album is way better than I expected it to be.

If you were looking for a straight up Rap album from B.o.B you know you fucked up, right (no Bill Duke)? That being said jawns like “Past My Shades” (where I’ll be explaining Lupe’s bars for weeks to come), “The Kids” with Janelle Monae (not a lot of rappin’ goin on here), “Fame”, “Airplanes Pt. 2″ (Eminem’s guest verse left an irradiated crater in the song that rendered Hayley Williams barren) and “Satellite” got put on repeat (No rapping goin’ on here, either).

Obvious singles like “Nothin’ On You” or “Airplanes” didn’t make me wanna throw up or jam an ice pick into my ears. I know, I’m as surprised as you are reading it. The two songs I didn’t like could’ve stayed on the cutting room floor in my opinion. I give “The Adventures Of Bobby Ray” a recommended maybe. It drops on April 27th.

Best Jawns: Giraffe Crack, Laughing Jockey, No Contact…Contact, Miles Chillin’, Nina, JT Goldfish, Truth Seekin’, Thinkin’ Of Eva, Light As A Feather, Drunk Socks and Verbal Headlock

Meh: N/A

Hot Garbage: N/A

Dart’s Take: If you’re a fan of instrumental music, instrumental Hip Hop or music in the vein of Clutchy Hopkins you’ll love “The Story Teller”. If you have no idea who the hell Clutchy Hopkins is and when you hear his music all you can think is “How are you supposed to rap over this?” then never mind & cop a J.Armz mixtape instead. I give it a highly recommended maybe. It dropped on April 13th.

Best Jawns: Intro, Destiny (Past, Present & Future), Introduce Myself, Diamond In The Back, The Rapper & The Trapper, A Song For Diana, Diesel, 88 MPH, Introduction To Love, In The Zone, A Break For You, Me, Him & Her, So Chill, Ride Around Grindin’, Gun Talk (Speak Your Peace, Piece), Quick Shootouts, Here I Come (The Bust), Animalistic, Reflections In The Water, An Average Day, Outatime (The Shoutro), Mic Check Freestyle, PSA (Remix) Freestyle and The Precursor

Meh: N/A

Hot Garbage: N/A

Dart’s Take: I’d been hearing about D-Man from local Hip Hop supporter D. Scribez  of Boston Hip Hop Online & the New England Hip Hop Pages for a while so I’d been waiting to finally hear this new mixtape he’s been working on. I heard the single “Introduce Myself” & liked what I heard but I had NO idea that this mixtape would be this good.

D-Man spits some nice bars over a bunch of his own production on what is easily one of the better mixtapes of the first quarter of 2010. You need to hear it for yourselves so download it here. I give it a highly recommended maybe because I know this is just a mixtape & he can do even better in the future. Salute

Best Jawns: Dream On, Everybody, Think About, Gettin’ Better, Affection, Change Situations, Disc-O-Island (Space Africa), Ponsonby Beat Down, Happy, 2 Things, Down to You, March, People Groove, Jelly Beans and Neuralgia

Meh: N/A

Hot Garbage: N/A

Dart’s Take: Grooveman Spot is one of my favorite all time producers from Japan, he dropped his new album “Change Situations” on Jazzy Sport April 6th and I was slow to catch on. I apologize for that because there is some serious heat on this project. Vocalists Muhsinah, Erik Rico, Kissey Asplund and Ahu (Dolly) blessed his slaps & Grap Luva (“Gettin’ Better”) & Lil’ Sci AKA John Robinson (“2 Things”) make memorable appearances as well.

From the opening “Dream On” to the sick instrumentals “Think About”, “Change Situations”, “Ponsonby Beat Down” down to the funky “Everybody”, “Affection”, “Happy” and “Down To You” it’s really hard to front on this project. I give “Change Situations”  yet another recommended maybe. Look for itOtherwise

Best Jawns: Shithead, The End of the Line, A Day in the Life, My Happy Song, Push Forward, Live Death Love Stress, Appreciate It, Rough Roads, Fun Times, You Know My Name and UHF

Meh: Complications and Smile

Hot Garbage: N/A

Dart’s Take: Josh of Hazardous Wastes project is all about real life shit you can relate to, relationships, money woes and ruminations about his place in the crazy world of Hip Hop. This is an impressive everyman effort and if you’re feeling what he’s bringing to the table then don’t hesitate to download it from his Bandcamp page. I give H.W.’s “A Year’s Worth Of Worry” a maybe but I look forward to hearing future material.

Best Jawns: Intro, I’m Burnt, Questions, In Gotti We Trust, Yessir, I’m Drunk, Riot In The Club, I’m The Man, I’m Burnt (Remix), Streetlights and Bounce, Rock, Skate (Kurupted Mix)

Meh: Face Down, All That I Want and Scrape

Hot Garbage: N/A

Dart’s Take: Kurupt is one of my all time favorite emcees. That being said a lot of this project is hit or miss. Kurupt bars just make me keep rewinding verses, though. I’m probably too big of a Kurupt stan to even review this shit right. I’ll just give it a maybe because it wasn’t as good as the other albums I gave recommended maybes to in this same review blog in my opinion but Kurupt’s the man so look for it anyways. “Streetlights” dropped on April 20th & Terrace Martin is all over this album so that’s a plus.

Best Jawns: Tracks 1-9

Meh: N/A

Hot Garbage: N/A

Dart’s Take: Love classic reggae? Then buy this almost 80 min Madlib mix of it. That’s all I got, y’all.

Best Jawns: Intro, My Comet, My Mind Is Gone, Rock On, Sitting Back, High Hopes, Girl, Send Me Your Love, We Out Buddy, Moving, Mechanical, Don’t Stop, The One, Oper8tor, Long Distance, Tape This, To The Beat, Wonderland, Jeeps, L.I.A.B. and Cherry (Outro)

Meh: N/A

Hot Garbage: N/A

Dart’s Take: So…Onra dropped some of my favorite projects in recent years like “Chinoiseries”, “1.0.8″, his collaboration with Byron The Aquarius “The Big Payback” and his collaboration with Quetzal “Present Tribute” but this shit right here? This shit right here? It might be some of his best work to date. Inspired by the boogie funk of Dam-Funk “Long Distance” is 21 tracks & 60 minutes of nothing but heat. Cop. it. NOW. Mos def.

Best Jawns: 4 My Holiks, 5 O’Clock Suff, I Need A Break, Oh Bebe, Housey, Jimmy Jazz, Worst Case Szenario, Deep Shit, Vienna, Hospital, Konnopke, Feelin Fly and Ozdemir

Meh: N/A

Hot Garbage: N/A

Dart’s Take: Suff Daddy’s “Suff Draft” LP from the Hi-Hat Club series from Melting Pot Music was one of my favorite instrumental Hip Hop projects of ’09. After hearing “The Gin Diaries” it’s clear that it’ll end up as one of my favorite instrumental albums of 2010 as well.

I played the hell out of “4 My Holiks”, “I Need A Break”, “Worst Case Szenario”, “Hospital”, “Konnopke” and “Ozdemir” plus the tracks with vocals on ‘em were all bananas. Mos def. It dropped on April 16th via Bandcamp & April 20th via Melting Pot Music. Cop it.

Best Jawns: Playing With Toys, Doing It My Way, Smoke & Mirrors, Aching Nodes, Line To Dot, Glaring Light and Let Me Trick You

Meh: N/A

Hot Garbage: N/A

Dart’s Take: Tokimonsta AKA The First Lady Of Brainfeeder has dropped a gang of mixtapes & mixes for D/L but here is her debut EP “Cosmic Intoxication”. All I can say is cotdayum. Cotdayum. Cotdayum. Listen to it here. Cop it here. Highly recommended maybe. Now I really can’t wait to hear her collaborative project with Suzi Analogue “Analogue Monsta”.

Dart’s 1st D/L Of The Day: Indigo Pyramid “Indigo Shades”

Dart’s 2nd D/L Of The Day: Slopfunkdust & Beat Fanatic “Smoker’s Choice Vol. 1″

Rest In Eternal Peace, Keith “Keithy E AKA Gifted Unlimited Rhymes Universal” Elam of GangStarr Posse, Gang Starr & Gang Starr Foundation

Props for trying to put cats on to new shit, because alot of this stuff I woulda never heard of, but I need some audio clips or something.

Dart_Adams April 24, 2010 at 6:58 pm

@jheri: 12 reviews. If I would’ve posted audio clips you never would’ve read it because I would’ve taken up all the bandwith & crashed the server on one post. Wait for our “Most Played For The Week” posts.

is it really that hard to do a little searching for your self? between amazon, soundcloud, last.fm and youtube i’m sure you could find samples of all these

jfats April 29, 2010 at 10:22 am

Love this feature. What about putting the title of the artist and album? A lot of this stuff is indie/underground and I have no idea the name of the artist or album when I’m reading your review.

Just a suggestion from someone who reads on the regular.
