What’s New In Dart’s iPod #14 AKA It’s A New Day! © Skull Snaps

by Staff on May 6, 2010

This week I’ll be reviewing nine new projects that recently hit the ‘net/bloggerverse and/or will be landing on store shelves soon in the following order: Ayatollah “The Quixotic”, Blacastan “Blac Sabbath”,  Dimlite “Prismic Tops”, Flying Lotus “Cosmogramma”, LMNO & Kev Brown “Selective Hearing Part 2″, Panacea “12 Step Program”,  Ras G “El-Aylien Part 1 EP”,  TY “Special Kind Of Fool” and Yahzarah “The Ballad Of Purple St. James” . For those of you new to this blog, I don’t rate albums on a scale or assign them a numerical value out of 5 or 10, instead I merely answer the all important question of “Is it worth buying or not?”. Here’s how my patented “Cop It Or Not” ratings system breaks down below:

Opinions be damned. This particular project has no redeeming qualities whatsoever and should come with a Surgeon General’s warning and/or a biohazard sticker. It should only be handled by hazmat teams or bomb/demolition squads. To quote Common & Canibus, this album is your worst nightmare squared.

Oh No! This CD is a drink coaster/table balancer/doorstop/gerbil/hamster room divider/frisbee/discus/makeshift shield/last ditch choice for a visor/alternate shuriken choice. Sell this shit to whoever is dumb enough to buy it from you.

Maeby (Maybe)! Depending on your own set of personal preferences you might like this joint. Give it a listen first to see if it’s in your lane or not.

Mos Def! Cop the album when it drops…’Nuff said.

Best Jawns: The Star of the Show, Harder They Come, Mantra, From Within, The Kids Are Crying Over You, Let ‘Em Know, Change, God’s Animals, Livin’ In a Dream World, Can’t Knock the Hustle, Pt. 2, I Can’t Make It Alone, The Rhyme Writers, Hello, How Can We Lose, When You Get Right Down to It, Superpeople, Take Me Higher, A Word from Derek, Quest for Fire, Fallin’ Love, Inside Out, Them Summer Days, Angkor Wat, Reflections, Hope of Deliverance, Tollahmania and Heavy Traffic

Meh: N/A

Hot Garbage: N/A

Dart’s Take: Legendary producer Ayatollah has a penchant for making ridiculous slaps and making great instrumentals projects over his long & distinguished career (“Now Playing”, “Listen”, “Beat Machine” & “Louder” all being among them), “The Quixotic” is more of the brilliance we’ve come to expect from the beatsmith. This digital only release dropped on May 4th and it’s 27 tracks & 50 minutes of heat rocks. Mos def. Cop it from iTunes, Amazon ($7.99) or 7 Digital.

Best Jawns: Blac Sabbath Intro, Blac Magic, The Dice Life, 3010, Crate Diggaz, Best That I Can, City to City, The Way It’s Done, Returnin’ to Nam, Diamond, You Wouldn’t Believe, The World, Anything Less, Crac House, The Darc Krystal, How Can You Be So Sure, The Life of a Tape, Life Is Not a Game/Outro and The Real (Remix)

Meh: N/A

Hot Garbage: N/A

Dart’s Take: Blacastan and ColomBeyond bodied this product on the production and lyrical sides. Brick Records? Congratulations on another hot album, can’t wait to hear the City Slickers LP. Cop this album. Don’t sleep on Blacastan. Trust me on this one. Highly recommended maybe.

Best Jawns: Kalimba Deathswamp/Kurt Feelings, On The Same Picture, Firevomit (O.D.N.), Sun-Sized Twinkles, Elbow Flood, Rump Studies, Can’t Get Used To Those (Afterlude) and Elbow Flood (Instrumental)

Meh: N/A

Hot Garbage: N/A

Dart’s Take: 37 minutes of brilliant spaced out blaps, blips & slaps. Not for everyone, though. Serious beatheads only need apply. Recommended maybe. Cop “Prismic Tops” from the Stones Throw Store as it dropped on May 4th.

Best Jawns: Clock Catcher, Pickled!, Nose Art, Intro / A Cosmic Drama, Zodiac Shit, Computer Face / Pure Being, …And The World Laughs With You, Arkestry, Mmmhmm, Do the Astral Plane, Satelllliiiiiteee, German Haircut, Recoiled, Dance Of The Pseudo Nymph, Drips / Auntie’s Harp, Table Tennis, Galaxy In Janaki and Velvet Cake

Meh: N/A

Hot Garbage: N/A

Dart’s Take: Are we seriously wasting time with this? Mos def. It dropped on May 4th. Available everywhere. Cop it. Next!

Best Jawns: The Ultimate, James Brown, Kragenoff, Ya Know, We Stay Rockin’, Do It Again, Good Gawd, Gotta Get It, Guaranteed, Feels Good and James Brown Pt. 2

Meh: N/A

Dart’s Take: This album was 36 minutes & change long. It took me twice that long to listen to it all the way through because I rewound through so many tracks (The Ultimate, James Brown, We Stay Rockin’, Do It Again, Guaranteed, James Brown Pt. 2, etc.)

. On this edition they took a James Brown group approach (LMNO’s name is James & Kev Brown, get it?), they even use several familiar James Brown music and vocal samples to great effect. The production? Bananas. LMNO & Kev Brown trade bars in a back & forth manner and the project features verses from Kaimbr, Trek Life, Hassaan Mackey, Kenn Starr, Chali 2na, Declaime & Mr. Brady.

The mix of Low Budget Crew members & West Coast vets blends together perfectly. An enjoyable listen from beginning to end. Length prevented this from getting a mos def. Also, if this comes with instrumentals? Cop it when it drops on May 11th. Highly recommended maybe.

Best Jawns: The Long Pull, Collard-Fried Grey Sky, Stumble Home, Sync-in City, Blue Oceanwave, Black Coffee, Texas Jigsaw Massacre, Revolution World Crazy, Immortal, Incubator Purgatory and The Pack-Up Line

Meh: Natural Selection and Katana Blue

Hot Garbage: N/A

Dart’s Take: Panacea just dropped their 5th album “12 Step Program”. I’m a fan of K-Murdock & Damu The Fudgemunk but I’ve never been too into Panacea. I’ve heard every project since “Ink Is My Drink” and they’re a talented bunch that make good music but for whatever reason they just don’t do it for me. They are far from wack so I give “12 Step Program” a recommended maybe and hereby turn in my “Backpackers Anonymous” membership card.

Best Jawns: Discipline09-1, Discipline09-2, Discipline09-3, Discipline09-4, Dak Leaver mix and Discipline09-2 GB Remix

Meh: Depending on your personal preferences: Discipline09-1, Discipline09-2, Discipline09-3, Discipline09-4, Dak Leaver mix and Discipline09-2 GB Remix

Hot Garbage: Again, depending on your personal preferences: Discipline09-1, Discipline09-2, Discipline09-3, Discipline09-4, Dak Leaver mix and Discipline09-2 GB Remix

Dart’s Take: Only die hard Ras G fans of that bugged out space shit need apply. If your looking for headnod beats or spittable jawns? Don’t bother with this EP at all.

Best Jawns: Don’t Cry, Wait, Heart Is Breaking, Little Star, Something Big, Emotions, Phantom Of The Opera, Get To The Sky, Happiness, I’m Leaving, ME, I Get Up, Falling, Special Kind Of Fool and Endtro

Meh: N/A

Hot Garbage: N/A

Dart’s Take: Ty’s new album dropped back on 4.20 stateside but I slept on it. If you’re not familiar with the UK emcees previous output you’ll still enjoy this offering. While this is a solid album in every aspect I just don’t see myself giving “Special Kind Of Fool” too much burn. Damn you, Roc Marciano! I give this a recommended maybe. Check it out.

Best Jawns: Strike Up The Band, Why Dontcha Call Me No More, Cry Over You, All My Days, Come Back As A Flower, Dedicated To You, The Lie, Last To Leave, Have A Heart, Change Your Mind, Starship, Shadow and Love Come Save The Day

Meh: N/A

Hot Garbage: N/A

Dart’s Take: Yahzarah’s been on the Foreign Exchange projects, released some material as Purple St. James, dropped “The Prelude” and here is the long awaited and highly anticipated release from Foreign Exchange Music “The Ballad Of Purple St. James”.

This album met my lofty expectations and came close to exceeding them. Easily one of my favorite R&B projects of 2010 so far along with Erykah Badu, Sade, Corrine Bailey Rae & Jose James. Mos def. Cop it. It dropped on May 4th.

Dart’s D/L Of The Day: Morpheground “Off D’Wrekkid Vol. 1

Dart’s 2nd D/L Of The Day: Ayatollah  “The Quixotic Remixes EP”

I’ll be changing the format of this review blog soon. It will be more emblematic of Bloggerhouse as some things I did on Poisonous Paragraphs need to stay there. Change is good. Look out for Eric, St/MIC & myself this Sunday from 7-9 PM EST on “Bloggerhouse presents Scrunchface Sundays” @ Bobblegods Radio. It will be epic.
