There’s only a few select cats that can get away with re-working the classic A.T.C.Q. cut, “Electric Relaxation”, Kool Kim..err..NYOIL is one of ‘em. I actually like this, the inclusion of Shadii on the hook is a nice touch. Peep the story behind “Alright” after the jump, it’s a pretty cool read:
I remember before I became NYOIL..when i was about 19/20 years old and released my first single off the Wild Pitch EMI label as Kool Kim of THE UMC’s. We had the opportunity to attend the “Jack The Rapper” convention in Atlanta. It was like a Hip Hop Carnival, all the dope Rappers were there meeting each other, and what made it so special is that we had a rising record “Blue Cheese” on the charts.
At some point in the early part of the convention I found myself in a group of Hip Hop Artist. Q-tip, Phife, Sadaat X, Lord Jamaal, and a bunch of other top dudes. Now I’ma be real with you fam I felt like a kid tryna hang out with his big brothers crew.. even though me and my partner Haas G (Phantom) were ON.. i still didn’t feel like a celebrity.. i just felt like a fan..
Well we were walking down Peachtree street in Atl and this dude in a car pulls up and ask the mass of us “Hey, Are yall a rap group or something?!?” Q-tip stepped forward and responded “Nah, We’re all different Rap Groups, we got A Tribe Called Quest, Brand Nubians, The UMC’s, ….” YOOOOO!! my mind was blown !!! Did “Q-tip from A tribe called Quest heard the Jungle Brothers album oh yes!” just acknowledge me and my group?!?!
Fam.. it was as if the moment he did that.. i became official it was as if everything changed in my life. I was Kool Kim from the UMC’s, I was a RAPPER (back when that meant something). You know i never really saw Q-tip again after that, maybe in passing .. never had a chance to tell him how much that gesture meant to me as a young man. It meant the world family.. I hope…that him and his team dig this version of their classic song and I hope it honors the legacy of ATCQ.
e you want to be in NYC.
