Dealing with the harsh realities that rap music often does, it isn’t hard to find songs that are seemingly void of positive messages or themes. Trek Life’s “Can’t Complain,” from his J. Bizness-produced Rhymes Within Reason EP, takes a refreshingly optimistic outlook on life’s hardships. It’s not that Trek doesn’t address problems in his life – “Sometimes life gives more than I can take,” he says – but his answers to those problems are the things that make life work living as he raps, “My little girl’s smile makes it worth while.” When asked what his inspiration was for writing “Can’ Complain,” Trek Life explained, “The song was directly inspired by a horrible day I was having. I noticed that I was starting to get down on myself over the events of that day and wrote the song to kinda put myself in check.”
Trek calls “Can’t Complain’s” J. Bizness beat “flawless.” The instrumental is a mood-lifter by itself with its light samples, keyboard and flute among them. Add Wyanne Vaughn’s voice in the mix and the song reaches a whole new level of chillness; her voice compliments the instrumentals with her laid back chorus, “Despite all of the pain/rain, I get no pain at all”.
Trek Life’s Everything Changed Nothing, produced entirely by Oddisee, drops July 27th via Mello Music group.
