Different Now is the final single from Mello Music Group’s label compilation Helpless Dreamer. This one is from senior label member Oddisee featuring his talented lil homie Toine of DTMD. The track starts out with a soul singer crooning “little signs of distance” foreshadowing the theme to come of maturity and it’s affects on attraction. Oddisee’s production opens up with warm strings & synths, solid drums & hi hats, and a flanging that creates a harmonic series that carries the song forward with ease. When the first verse comes in Oddisee is found waxing philosophically on how his taste in women has changed:
“She practically handed me the ass, and I could care less, because she lacked class. The fitting of her dress would have had me at 21. It’s funny son, just a few years older, more revealing’s less appealing, and I’m more into shoulders, and other subtleties.”
The verse isn’t the only thing more honed, as Oddisee’s production is polished and shines brightly throughout, offering variations and change ups to keep the listeners ears entertained. The second verse is contributed by Toine, 1/2 of the group DTMD, who offers and equally compelling look at lifes ever changing landscape.
Oddisee’s contribution to the MMG label compilation is more than just Different Now, in fact Oddisee offers up 4 new tracks for listeners on Helpless Dreamer. The project is yet another step towards Oddisee’s big solo effort coming later this year, People Hear What They See, which is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated albums from MMG in 2011.
