Two Southeast Michigan raised titans of futuristic underground Hip Hop have collided to create this stunningly progressive work of sonic anarchy. “Kadence vs Samiyam” combines the multifaceted vocal talents of Kadence (SomeOthaShip Connect/Abolitionist Projects)–with the help
of some of his fellow Abolitionist crew members–who has received international acclaim for his mind-bending lyricism and iconoclastic socio-philosophical subject matter, with the production sounds of Samiyam (Brainfeeder) who is also well known on the international Hip Hop and Electronic music scenes for his skillful fusion of sliding Hip-Hop rhythms with Jazz, Soul and Funk based Electionica. When two creative powers of this magnitude meet, listeners can expect a no less than impressive display of sheer originality..
Today I bring to you one of the most polished up and coming emcee’s out of Detroit known as “Louie P. Newton”. In his music you hear the soul as well as the struggles of Detroit every time Louie raps. His
first release “The Bottom” paints a vivid picture of a man trying to survive. The production, also by Louie, makes this track more symphony than rap music.
Louie P. Newton is putting together an EP that will drop later on in this year towards the winter. This is his first single release. I guarantee if you press play on this track that you will understand all that I say about this track. this track is hip hop. This track is Detroit! Audio and DL after the jump…

With their latest album, C&U Music Factory, still snatching up acclaim, long-time duo and LA Symphony co-founders Cookbook & Uno Mas hit us with the album’s second single, “Petty”. This time, the self-proclaimed fundamentalists address their discontent for the increasing emergence of hip-hop amateurs. With the help of featured emcee Scarub (of Living Legends), Cookbook & Uno Mas deliver thought-provoking rhymes, not only to discourage the amateurs, but to showcase their own talents as well. “We’re proclaiming that we are still set apart from the masses due to our skill at our craft, and our musicianship,” says the duo on the message behind their latest track.
Produced by Cookbook, the synth-heavy beat is accompanied by well-said verses about the group’s intolerance for the “wack rhyme disease” that seems to be ever-spreading. The song is filled with proud proclamations of their musical integrity, with lines like, “We started this, and we gon’ finish this/ We been a part of this real rap, no images/ Real artists, hard fact, it’s limitless/ Hard flows, these foes lose their grimaces.” It’s clear that Cookbook & Uno Mas prefer truth to mass appeal. “We want people to dig through, and pull out these golden nuggets that exist,” says the group.
“Petty” is featured on Cookbook & Uno Mas’ C&U Music Factory, out now via AudioSketchBook / End Of Earth Records.
New mixtape from Breez Evahflowin, “AS He Goes In..”, presented by Buck 50 Kutter DJ’s. Read Breez’ take on the offering:
Most people I’m cool with are really good at whatever it is they do. In that I’ve been fortunate enough to have made the acquaintance of DJ Rob Swift. A few months back I reached out to Rob and asked if he could recommend any DJ’s, I was looking for a person or crew to put together my Mixtape promoting the “As He Goes On…” LP dropping this fall. He referred me to The Buck 50 Kutter DJs. On that note I’d like to publicly thank Rob. A few months prior I had been blessed with the opportunity to rock with these guys at Rob’s record release party (“the Architect” out now Amazon). These were true Turntablist and I was way impressed. I didn’t want to run that old ‘do it for the love’ song and dance so I didn’t reach out to them. Upon Mr Swift’s recommendation I called the Kutters and they showed love. Out of respect for their time and effort, I left them to do what ever they felt with the 45 songs I gave them.
What manifested in a surprisingly short time later is what I’d like to share with you now. Of course I love it, you would too if it were your songs in their hands . It’s that feeling of creating a part of something and giving it to a team that can bring out it’s potential. They found a story in the songs and told it in a way no one else could. This is beat juggling, precise cuts and fly rhymes on a 52 minute non-stop DJ/MC showcase. A sincere Thank you to Dre Mayes, D’ Official and Dopeman, the Buck 50 Kutter DJs.
Mayer Hawthorne explains the story behind this record, hit the jump for audio:
“I met Nottz at Nightlife’s Dilla Tribute in L.A. and we just kept in contact. I had always been a fan of Nottz since the 90s. He sent me a bunch of beats and at first I had no idea what to do with any of them, but eventually it hit me. I sang a hook for him on his album as well. The song is a cover of a cat named Otis Leville which is one of my all time fav soul sides, but relatively unknown 45. I don’t think Nottz even knew it. I actually even made up some of the words because no one could make out what he said in the original. ha! When Nottz sent me that batch – that particular beat stood out. It had the same chord progression as the Otis Leville, so I just went with it.”
“Seasons,” the latest Apollo Brown single off of The Reset, is very much an exercise in melancholy. “I really wanted to hear something on the sad side, some grasping-onto-life type music,” Apollo explains of his vision for the track. The old-time radio crackle, sparse guitar work, and echoing hook provide the perfect backdrop for the wistful lyrics of rising Kansas City emcee Stik Figa, currently working on a full length with producer Oddisee. A longing to escape his hometown and make it big flows through every syllable and the rapper uses seasonal imagery – winter in particular – to represent the stark and unforgiving emotions that can accompany such lofty goals. Still, both Apollo Brown and Stik Figa have achieved a level of success that only comes through perseverance, no better stated than in the line, “With the sun still shinin’ / It doesn’t seem as cold.” “Seasons” explores sentiments we can all relate to and its sadness proves cathartic when coupled with the achievements of the song itself.
