Zane One – “Zane One (L.A. Woman)” prod. by Dert

Posted by: Eric  //  Category: Uncategorized

Even as she drops her debut album, L.A. Woman, Zane One is no stranger to hip-hop. With her latest single, “Zane One (L.A. Woman),” for which she just released a new video, Zane brings us back to the days when dope lyrics matched seamlessly with equally killer rhymes and turntables conquered the hooks. Along with her confident rhymes such as, “Serve them with the daily supplements and keep them hazy,” the song is blessed with some skillfully done vocal scratches of both Lauryn Hill and M.C. Lyte as an ode to female rappers. Produced by Dert, the beat’s distorted guitar riff is lined with hard, crispy drum work to back up the assertive flow, which Zane One delivers with confident ease. Not only does Zane One refer to her extensive hip-hop resume throughout the song, but she also points out what makes her truly unique as an M.C., including her motherhood, as she keeps her rhymes on task with a mission to convince all listeners that she is an L.A. Woman who can spit. Hit the jump for audio…

Trav’s Most Played For The Last Couple Weeks

Posted by: Travis  //  Category: Most Played For The Week, Uncategorized

As I start to slowly get back into the hip hop routine (I spent most of the past couple months checking out the Brazilian Tropicalia movement), I’m starting to catch up things I have missed. All in all, this is turning out to be a good year for hip hop, with some dope tracks dropping on some impressive releases. As you’ll notice, my “Bump” list isn’t full of up to the date type of stuff. It’s things that I played while I was in South American coupled with a few things that have caught my ear these last couple weeks home as I try to listen to as much of the new stuff as I can. This of course leads to missing a few things, but hopefully when it slows down toward the end of the third quarter as cats ramp up for the fourth quarter onslaught, I can go back and relisten to some stuff. None the less, here is my list for ummmm the last week, give or take 6-8 weeks…..

Rapsody – Every

The girl Rapsody, of Kooley High fame, is getting set to drop Return of the B-Girl on 9th Wonder’s Wonderful Life/Jamla label here in the very near future.  A lot of us got our introduction to Rapsody by hearing her spit in between songs on 9th’s Dream Merchant 2 2007 release. And most of us were like, “Who the fuck is that?!.” Then of course her contributions to the Kooley High success has been important as well. “Every,” which 9th produced himself, has been stuck in my subconscious for the past week or so. Rapsody takes her style back to female emcees used their skills instead of their sexuality, ala MC Lyte, with an on point, razor sharp delivery. Her ability to deliver a song with a subject and story shines through. The beat incorporates a familiar sample, but 9th puts his own spin on it, and it’s the beat that lends a dark tone to really push the song into the “DOPE!” level.

Dam-Funk- Hood Pass Intact f. MC Eiht (MP3)

Posted by: Eric  //  Category: Uncategorized

via Stones Throw:

We’ve got a 12-inch maxi single & video for Dam-Funk’s “Hood Pass Intact” coming up late in the summer. DF will be joined on the vocal mix of the standout track from his Toeachizown 5-LP set by West Coast legend MC Eiht, marking their first collaboration in nearly a decade. Most people remember MC Eiht as the lead member of the group Comptons Most Wanted, or for his infamous MC battle with DJ Quik, or for his unforgettable role in the film ‘Menace 2 Society’ … but only the left coasters know and respect him as the originator of the phrase “Gyeah”, which has been bitten and jacked by every MC and rapper on the planet, including Jay Z. Artist Spotlight: Dirty Hank “Born To Save The World, But Got Drunk & Over Slept”

Posted by: Travis  //  Category: Artist Spotlight, Uncategorized

It’s hard to hide my fondness for rap that’s main subject matter is getting fucked up, shitty women, and the combination of the two. I’m not saying that’s the only thing Providence, Rhode Island emcee Dirty Hank is all about, but he does give some shine to those topics and he does it well. Part of the ever-growing Poorly Drawn People clique, Hank is unapologetic on songs like “Song About A “C” Word” and the PDP member Reason assisted “Overslept”. And while he hates the comparisons, he is equal parts circa 80′s Beastie Boys, a tamed down RA The Rugged Man and Slug, and those are all meant as a compliment. Hank dropped his “Dirty Hank’s Guide to Giving Up”, earlier this year and it has been in steady rotation on my iPod since then. Assisted by super producer Falide and up and coming MadPlaid, the beats are all on point, giving Hank a nice background to drop his alcohol fueled rhymes. Since we both share similar interests, Hank and I chopped it up a bit in what is sure to offend the most liberal street hustling pimp. And if the interview doesn’t offend you, then surely Hank’s list of the “Top 5 Ugly Chicks I’d Still Fuck” will….

Copywrite f/ Middle Distance Runner “Forever And A Day” (Produced by RJD2)

Posted by: Travis  //  Category: Uncategorized

In the wake of so much loss, sometimes you can find enlightenment. Somewhere between frustration and remorse, Copywrite found the words to pen “Forever and A Day”. Reflecting on the recent loss of his longtime friend and collaborator, Camu Tao, the words flowed from the page to the microphone. With a song this special, Copywrite turned to his other longtime collaborator RJD2, who like Camu and Copywrite was also a founding member of the group MHz. The haunting production matches the mood of the somber lyrics of Copywrite. In order to complete the song, Middle Distance Runner, an Indie Rock Band, was brought in to add layers and sing the hook. In the end, this track speaks to anyone who has experienced loss, regret and a longing for a loved one who has passed. This track is part of Copywrite’s upcoming album “The Life and Times of Peter Nelson” due out in October of 2010 on Man Bites Dog Records.

Tone Tank and Scott Thorough are both part of the Nuclear Family with Junk Science and others. You may remember Tone Tank as being a part of Iller Than Theirs with Kray and Scott Thorough has appeared on numerous Nuc Fam joints, including “Roads” off of the first Junk Science album. It’s good to hear Tone back in the mix and I’ve been impressed with Scott’s vocals, this shit should be something to check.  Be on the look out for the “lost” Tone Tank interview here in the near future - Trav

Straight from Tone Tank…..

Here’s a song I did a song with Kool A.D. from Das Racist. Scotty made the beat. Within 5 mins of coming through to our studio for the first time Kool A.D. was introduced to Probe of Nuk Fam. Within minutes, they smoked together and were shoved into the booth to ramble high-prophetic ramblings in the background for the full length of the track. Also Me and Kool A.D. wrote the last verse (which is a back and forth) on the fly, which was a lot of fun, because we got to rap about Method Man having a fake patois in the movie “The Wackness”. We also got to rap about “flowing weird like elephant man, either the reggae singer or the real elephant man”. Def had a good time making this one. Airhorn is the new cowbell.

TRACKLIST

1. CRACK SELECTOR (feat. KOOL A.D. of DAS RACIST)

Batsauce & Baje One – Summertime Preview

Wait a minute, you are saying one of my favorite producers doing it right now is teaming up with Baje One, the emcee from one of my favorite groups? Where have I been living, a closet? Oh wait, South America. Anyway, this was a nice surprise to see first thing this morning as I awoke after 30 hours of travel time. I haven’t gotten the “inside” information from Bat yet about this, but sounds like a great project. Bat keeps getting better and better and it’s great to hear Baje One over a dope Batsauce beat. – Trav

‘SUMMERTIME’ is a free producer project from the homie Batsauce constructed entirely from versions of Gershwin’s classic song ‘Summertime’. The full project (due out in a few weeks) will feature special guests Mr. Lif, Mass Influence, Dillon, Qwazaar, Lady Daisey, Baje One (of Junk Science), Chopp, and Wynton Kelly Stevenson. Batsauce is the producer behind some super-fresh music, including The Smile Rays and Lady Daisey, and will also be releasing a FREE EP with yours truly (Baje One) later this summer.

This two-song preview includes my song about being a little kid and riding bikes to chinatown to buy fireworks in the early 90′s, and Dillon’s love letter to ‘A Lady Named Summer.’ Beyond producing the tracks, Batsauce made this fun lil video preview too…
