A day with the Master

Posted by: DJSoulClap  //  Category: Hip Hop

So on Monday Masta Ace and Edo.G came to the town where I study, Kiel. I’ve seen Ace for the seventh time, each time it’s different, but this time it was really special!

I arrived in Kiel on Sunday,I drove 2 1/2 hours with my brother, since I don’t really live in Kiel anymore, I just go there to write my exams (but pssssst). So that night there was supposed to be a Ustream of Ace and Edo from Birmingham, England. Right on time at 9pm my time they were sitting in front of the laptop ready to stream. During the chat i mentioned that I’m watching football, and they asked how I can do that in Germany. I got Digital TV with ESPN America, so I can watch all the NFL games. Ace and Ed got all excited, since they are huge football fans and they knew they would come to Kiel the next day. They said they might wanna watch Monday Night Football over at my crib. The stream continued for over an hour, whoever wants to watch it, you can check it here (It was really cool):

The same night I emailed Ace if they really wanted to come to the crib to watch the game, and he was like: DEFINITELY. So the next day I went grocery shopping and got some beer and coke (cola, lol). I was preparing a lasagna and some chicken curry for the night. I also got the word 2 days ago, that Strick would come too, he will be the Merch Guy this tour. Akrobatik and Paten Locke were also announced for the show.

My boys Esperado and Matt Sense also had their first big performance with 12 Finger Dan as the local act, they had a couple beats from me too, and they ripped it, they did a great job. Matt picked me up around 4 and we went over to Epserado to do a last little rehearsal (I had to kick a verse too). We went to the Luna Club around 6 to do the sound check. Ace, Edo, Ak, P, Strick and DJ Moe-D arrived around 7. It was a very warm welcome and Ace told me that they would premiere the joint I did for their album. I didn’t even get to hear it before that day, so I was really excited about it. I heard it during the sound check and it sounded crazy.
Anyway, my boys got on stage around 9.30 and did a great show, Ak and Paten went on afterwards and ripped it too. Ace and Edo got on stage around 11. They did ALL the classic joint like – I got to have it, The Symphony, Love comes and goes, Born 2 roll (with the 3rd verse over the Ante Up beat) Good ol love, Beautiful, Rock the beat and a lot more, they also played a lot of the songs off the new album. The people went totally crazy and since it was a prettysmall club and it was packed, it had a really great feel to it.
So they left the stage for a short moment to come back for an Encore, it started with Take a walk, by Ace and then there was my moment, I don’t wanna tell y’all too much, besides that it was a world premiere, just check the video right here: (The Sound quality is really good)

So after the show I jumped in the tour van and we went to the hotel for a quick second, before we got over to my brothers (my former) crib. My brother and a couple friends were already there, and since the living room is pretty small, it was PACKED!
Ace was really classic, while watching football he was drinking tea and Henny, lol. We talked about a lot of things, but I can’t tell y’all everything, I just say it reached from music to plastic surgery… Ak and Edo were a little pissed that the Pats were getting their ass beat tho. Akrobatik was ustreaming live from the appartment, making bets when Ace would fall asleep, but Ace stayed awake doing some, what Ak called “Pre-Game-Routines”. I also finished the lasagna and cooked the rice to go with the chicken curry, and everybody was really happy about getting something to eat late at night, don’t need to tell y’all that I’m a hobby chef, just ask these dudes, lol. I brought em back to the hotel around 6 am, they had to leave for Oslo, Norway around 7, so you can be pretty sure they didn’t catch any sleep… But that’s how it is if you do what you love.

All of these MC’s are great people and I felt really fotunate to spend a whole night with em. See y’all next year!

Clap

Edit: Ace gave me an A&E shirt plus… one of the CD’S that were already pressed up, with the A&E logo on it and in a digi pack, which is way cooler than the jewel case. I will leave that motherfucker sealed! This version can never be sold and I’m really fortunate to have one, HA!

A & E – Arts & Entertainment

Posted by: DJSoulClap  //  Category: Hip Hop

For my taste, 2009 has been an incredible good year for Hip Hop. We have new dudes like Fashawn, Kid Cudi and Wale coming up as the next generation, who all released hot albums, we got some of the Heavyweights like Eminem, Jay-Z and Raekwon who released great albums, some hot ungderground albums like Double Barrel or the Superstar Quamallah album „The Invisible Man“ and we also had huge disappointments, like that Busta Rhymes album, which was really close to garbage. I know a lot of y’all won’t agree on these classifications, but that’s the way i see it.

An album that doesn’t really fit into any of these categories is „Arts & Entertainment“ by Masta Ace & Edo.G. Two legends who are making music for 20 years, uniting to record an album. Of course the expectations have been incredibly high. The first thing I gotta say about the album is, that I love the mixdown. The quality is great, sounds better than Blueprint 3. Filthy Rich and Ace were doing an incredible job on that. Not everybody has an album with a huge sound like that (wink wink Cormega).
The album is a concept album, as usual. It’s set up like a TV night and The Bundies, the latest signing of Ace’s m3 label, are playing the couple that’s guiding you through the album, in a really hilarious way. The Album starts off with a hypnotizing beat by M-Phazes for the track „Hands Up High“. Sounds more like an Edo joint than an Ace joint, sound wise. It’s almost Dr. Dre like. Definitely catchy, just like the hook, it’s a goodtrack for live shows. The raps are typical battle raps… „Your girl lips cute play the medley on the flute“ (Ace) All in all a really good one! Number 2 features Large Pro and is called „Fans“. Ace starts off and raps like he’s talking about his wife, when in fact he’s talking about the fans. Large Pro sounds great on this beat and is the perfect feature guest, Edo is coming correct too. Another good one.
The next joint is called „A’s & E’s“ and it’s the first concept song of the album. Ace mostley uses words that start with A and Edo uses words starting with E. HOT! Marsha Ambrosius is on the hook, which sounds a little weird, but in a good way, fits the song perfectly! The melody of the song is really simple, the drums make the track. They sound sick! Next up, the single „Little Young“. I’m sure everybody has heard it, seen the incredible video and loved it. The song has been on BET 106 and Park last week, I think that’s a great thing, hope some of these kids listened close!

„Reminds Me“ might be my favorite track of the album, it’s Ace’s solo joint, Edo is just doing the hook. I love the vibe of the song, a really soulful, relaxed beat and Ace is spitting 2 of his verses that we love him for: „Play this on your jukebox in your bar rooms, who the best who the worst all this arguin won’t matter when the smoke clears, Hip Hop’s not dead, there’s a little hope here…“ Gotta love this!
After this, there is another relaxed joint called „Good Music“ which features Pos of De La Soul. Another favorite. The DJ Spinna beat gives the 3 MC’s a lot of room to flow and deliver their message. The hook is very simple but absolutely perfect, Pos is definitely the right feature for a beat like this, and he told me that this is an absolutely great record. Everything fits.
Next up is one I like the least off the album. I don’t like the Double-O beat and KRS is coming with lines like „most of y’all pussy, the rest of y’all dickheads“. That is definitely not what you wanna hear from somebody who’s always preaching about the temple of Hip Hop…
But the next track saves it. It’s Edo’s solo joint called “Over There“. Another M-Phazes production, this dude is killing it right now. Not much to say about it, great one. Following is another joint about touring which features DOITALL from the Lords of the Underground. Sounds like someone used the „Juicy Fruit“ drums on here. Solid track, really good one again.
Next up is the grimey peak of the album. This one needs no Hook, „Ei8ght is enuff“, Ace and Ed spit 8 bars back and forth, some really mean lines the beat makes you put on your ugly face. From what I read all over the net this is one of the fan favorites on the album.

Track 11 is called „Here I go“. It has a really nice piano beat and Edo starts talking about his history in the game, Ace is becoming a little more personal with some personal fears that you face when you are an artist. 3rd verse is done by Jamelle Bundy, she’s one half of the Bundies and an incredible singer. She doesa great job.
Last track on the album is called „Dancing like a white girl“ and it features the rock group Chester French and Pav Bundy. I read that people really had mixed feeling about it. Some say this sounds like a lame effort to sound commercial, the others say they love it cause it’s so funny. You gotta look at the track as for what it is. There’s a reason they put it in the end. It doesn’t really fit the rest of the tracks, Ace & Edo knew that, but they wanted to do something different and funny. Now somebody tell me that this ain’t hilarious. On tour, they often talk to the people and dance with em afterwards. So imagine em chilling after the show in Europe and some white girls dancing with em completely off rhythm, trying to impress them, you need to make a track about this. And they did. After all this is just a great production, the beat is hot, the Lyrics are funny, so don’t complain you fockers…

On this example you can see what’s wrong with Hip Hop today. It’s like half of the fans are complaining that shit changed and doesn’t sound like the early 90′s and the other half is complaining that everybody is stuck on the golden age sound. Ace & Edo just did a really entertaining album, it is versatile, it is produced really well, maybe there could have been 3 more tracks on it but overall it’s just good music, simple and plain… Everybody who said they didn’t like it should give it a chance to grow on them.

Everybody make sure to visit for some exclusive videos, the attempt to reuinite the Juice Crew is super interesting!

Trav's "Most Played For The Week"

Posted by: Travis  //  Category: Most Played For The Week

Welcome everyone to what is to be sure to be a new page in dreaded blog world. Why do I say dreaded? As my fellow Bloggerhouse member Dart eloquently pointed out in our introduction post last week, the blog world has gotten a little over-saturated. Now I’m not one to rip on the next man for doing his own thing, but when you aren’t doing your own thing, that’s where the problem lies. I’m not going to say we are the save alls to the ills surrounding hip hop or blogging for that matter. I’m just here to say we are here to bring quality and originality. I’m hoping for a great adventure from here on out, if nothing else, it’ll be original. One last thing before we get this show on the road, this is my first time working with the word press template after working with blogger for four years, so bear with me while I figure this shit out.

Not to be out done by brothers in blog, yours truly drops his most played tracks of the last little while. We all have are own tastes, but the one thing we do have in common is we have high standards when it comes to our hip hop music. We all like quality music (I’ll withhold judgment on Dart’s 50 cosign until I hear it…haha)

The Brown Bag Allstars - Make Way (J57 Remix)

It’s hard telling when I got this track, since The Brown Bag Allstars have been one of the busiest groups out there this summer and autumn. I was listening to the iPod on random one day while at work when this track came on. Checking the track, it immediately stuck out for it’s authentic hip hop flavor that sounds like it came from the golden age. Consisting of J57 (JLOG1C), The Audible Doctor, Koncept, Soul Khan, Cold Codeine, DJ Goo, DJ E Holla, & Deejay Element, the Fat Beats backed Brown Bag AllStars hook up a funky horn sample that just drips of true hip hop sounds.

Masta Ace & Edo G – Over There

I couldn’t have a list of current hot tracks without a track or two from the new A&E album. I’m warming up to it after starting a little cold on it (not because of the music, but because of the promo that was slipped to me a month or so ago). Backed by a smooth M-Phazes beat, both Ed sounds natural over the slick goodness. Backed by simple strings, handclaps and a quiet storm like vocal sample, it’s a kick back and chill to the music. Ironically enough, this is a straight Ed solo track (Ace handles some of the chorus, just adlibs though) and he works wonders with the track, dropping the kind of lines we expect from the veteran MC.

Educated Consumers feat Poorly Drawn People - My Us

Coming in over a rock tinged guitar, Educated Consumers team up with one of my favorite groups, Poorly Drawn People. Each MC from SeezMics, Storm Davis to Reason each drop a ruff rhyme over the dark, menacing beat. The three work really well together, all complimenting each other quite nicely. I had this on iPod “rewind” for a good portion of a day not too long ago.

Apollo Brown – Down There
If you’ve followed me much in the past year, you know I’m on a big Detroit kick. I’ve also been listening to a lot of instrumentals jawns (for my Philly heads), so when a Detroit producers makes an instrumental joint, you know I have to hear it. Apollo Brown is the latest D-town beatmaker to grace us with his presence. While writing the other night, “Down There” from his Skilled Trade LP came on and the deep bass line started shaking my computer desk. The carribean flavored track is rich with horns and a deep bass line that rumbles anything not held down.

Paten Locke - Ventilation

First off, if you haven’t got P Locke’s “Super Ramen Rocketship”, stop what are doing and go get that now. Got it? Good. The album is one of those that I seem to have a new favorite every other week, but the one track that is stays on that favorite list is “Ventilation”. It’s spacey like sound gives it a light feeling, much like it’s title might suggest. The best part everything is handled by Paten, the lyrics, the beat and the scratching. That’s right, there is scratching present.

ST/Mic – We Kings

I had heard of this ST/Mic cat through his label Domination, who sends me a lot of promotional stuff, and I’m sure I’ve heard of him before that, just can’t place where. Anyway, “We Kings” is a track that stuck out on his latest album, “Honest Music”, and once again, there is nothing fancy about the track, it’s just solid hip hop music.

Ancient Tongues – Hard Road

The first single, “Hard Road”, from the Ancient Tongues has been mentioned both by Eric and myself over the past month. It’s a different track to be sure. It’s got some alternative type of sounds to it, like it could get some play on a college radio station really easy. It almost reminds me of an MC 900 Ft Jesus track from back in the day. So what I’m really trying to say here is that it’s got it’s own sound and flavor, something that isn’t always found in today’s hip hop music.

Sene & Blu - Won Thousand Girls

Being a fan of both Blu and Sene, I was curious on how this project would turn out, especially with Blu supplying the beats. I’m not going to lie and not say I was more into Blu’s MC skills than his production skills. Blu laces up an oldie sample for Sene to drop an ode to the ladies and it works quite well. It’s got that old rag-time/fifties type of flavor beat wise, something that grabs me anyway. Sene is a slept on MC that deserves more shine than he gets. The beat and the topic speaks to me in volumes.

The Strangerz – Custodianz

This track could quite possibly be in my top 10 list at the end of the year. “Custodianz” is a dark and menacing track with loud drums and an eerie vocal sample that sounds like it came straight from the sewers of NYC with a Happy Meal and a dead rat. Who are The Strangerz? If you read WYDU or WTR much the past year, you will surely recognize the voices is the dudes from Tha Connection, Hus KingPin and SmooVth Dude along with Marvelous Magnum, who comes off strong with his verse as well, dropping memorable lines. Not sure which catches my ears more, the beat or the lines the cats are spitting. Makes me want to nod my head with my fist slamming down on a table top. That’s hip hop.

E The Real - Wasted Emotion

I like beats that were made out of weird sounds. Something original, you don’t need to sample a Marvin Gaye song or whatever other soul record you were thinking about to make a decent album. Don’t get me wrong, I love a good soul beat as much as the next man. But when someone uses something that sounds liked chopped bag pipes, you got my attention. Frank The Butcher lives up to his name and chops up some original sounds to make this beat an interesting one. It also helps that one of my favorite artists in E TheReal kicks his no no nonsense rhymes over said beat. It has the making for a great track.

Ace & Edo G: Bad News

Posted by: Travis  //  Category: Hip Hop

We got some bad news on the Ace & Edo G front tonight. I’m cool with Ace’s cousin, C.C. who runs his site and also did the website (www.aetheduo.com) and she sent me a text to be on the look out for a video which Ace announces that the brass at the cable TV channel, A&E didn’t take too kindly to the logo, the name or the promo trailers they had ready to go spoofing A&E shows. Needless to say, this kind of throws a wrench into the cog that Ace and Ed had going rather strong lately. It’s going to push the release date back obviously, but here is Ace talking about it….. But be sure to BUY the album when it does drop, cause it’s seriously a dope album.

A&E – The First 48

Posted by: Travis  //  Category: Hip Hop

By now you know, or at least you should know, that Masta Ace and Edo G have teamed up to make a collaborative album. Going as A&E, they are dropping “Arts & Entertainment” on 10-6-09. I was fortunate to hear the album this weekend (don’t ask me to link it, cause I won’t) and I don’t think it will disappoint the Masta Ace or Edo G fans out there. I need to listen to it a little more to get my bearings on it, but it should be another feather in the cap for the legacy of both artists.

For Homicide detectives, the clock starts ticking immediately. Partnering up for their collaborative LP as the duo “A&E” Masta Ace and EDO. G come up with their own trailer for one of Cable TV’s top shows “First 48″ on the A&E Network (get it “A&E”).

See if Ace and EDO are successful at cracking the case?

Don’t forget, Masta Ace and EDO. G’s collaborative LP, Arts & Entertainment, is in stores on 10-6-09

I’ve known about this little group project for quite awhile and I’m sure we’ve mentioned it a time or two on the site already. But with an actual date and a track listing being dropped, the anticipation level just got kicked up a notch. I try not to let me immense Ace stanisms get in the way, but this is probably my most anticipated album on the 2009 schedule. Hopefully it lives up to it all……-Trav
