Elaqent – Persona (Now Available!)

Posted by: Eric  //  Category: Now Available

By now, you should be familiar with Canadian beatmaker Elaquent. If not, please read this post or you can download our “Old To The New” blend-tape that features my all-time favorite Elaquent production, “Gobstopper” (an ode to Dilla, that you’ll find mixed with the Ed O.G. classic “I Got To Have It”).  Yet, I’m especially amped this morning as Elaquent just informed us that TODAY his new LP, “Persona” can be purchased via Itunes.  As an added bonus, I’ve included a track from the album, “So Far So Good” for your listening enjoyment.  Support good beats!!

In preparation for his new album, “Persona” which drops on the 26th of this month, producer Elaquent let loose this collection of “Freebies” via his FaceBook page late last week.  You’ll recall Elaquent’s appearance on these pages with the well-received “After Midnight”, more specifically the bangin’ “Dilla ode”, “Gobstopper”.  Be sure to peep this and pick up the LP when it drops.

LoveJones Feat Only Ones Crew – Love Potion No. 9th: The Hangover

Posted by: Travis  //  Category: Hip Hop

What’s good y’all. Little slow around here this week, with the shortened work week and a holiday week at that, so we probably won’t get too crazy this week. Look for a return of the WYDU Classics this weekend and probably a couple other things. Until then, enjoy some of the better artist submissions we have gotten lately and enjoy your time with the fam. – Trav

LOVE POTION NUMBER 9th: THE HANGOVER

Love Potion Number 9th: The Hangover is an A side B side tape inspired by, with all beats borrowed from 9th Wonder. The A side is 8 songs that were released back in 2007 as a part of the original “Love Potion Number 9th”. After receiving lots of positive feedback, the B Side, “The Hangover” was recorded. Spanning from early 2008 to the summer of 2009, “The Hangover” is the result of releasing and gaining support from the original. After promoting the debut album “Sunday Drive”, “Love Potion” started receiving even more positive feedback and interest, so “The Hangover” portion, which was previously unreleased, was added to complete the tape. In honor of 9th Wonder’s contribution to the project as well as serving as one of the primary influences, David Hildreth created the cover and Heath O’Campo designed the layout.

“Love Potion Number 9th” features The Only Ones Crew, which consisted of Adullessence, Mike Schpitz aka LoveJones, Large Marge and Stik Figa. “Love Potion” is also sponsored by FlawlessHustle.com, RefinedHype.com and Chicago Sneaker Boutique AKIN. If anyone can get this project to 9th Wonder, there is a handsome reward in it for you. Shout out to the whole Topeka, Kansas aka Paradise City aka Top City for your continued support.

My man Ravage sent this over to me. Of course, I’m always down to hear ANYTHING with Elzhi on it, but the rest of the joint is nice as well and shouldn’t be slept on.

The song is the brand new banger produced by DJ SARASA called Bullet Train!

Crew54 SXSW Special Part One & Crew Deep Mixtape

Whats good fam? I finally finished editing this weeks 54 Reality Show, I have tons and tons of footage from SXSW so I had to break it up into a two part series. We got the homie Peter Rosenburg to bless us with the opening shout out (one of many) and feature footage from the days leading up to the official SXSW Music jump off. Also we covered the first day of the festival with footage of Blu, U-N-I, and the SXSW Soul show with Wayna, Bavu Blakes, & Mojoe. This is a very entertaining episode, it moves fast and we do what we always do, keep it breezy.

DJ Eleven Mixtapes

I discovered DJ Eleven last year, when I came across his Winter Sadness mixtape. When I say mixtape, I mean exactly that, the old school definition. That particular mixtape happen to be one of my favorites last year. It wasn’t exclusively hip hop, this particular mix contained everything from Etta James, to White Stripes to Ghostface. I like some variety in my music and I like music that creates a mood, and that’s exactly what Winter Sadness did, it created a mood. Somehow, I happen to get on DJ Eleven’s mailing list, which is quite alright with me. His most recent news letter contained a bunch of goodies, including Winter Sadness 2, which is just as good as last years, but only download it if you like variety in your music. - Trav

Artist: VA
Title: Certified Banger Presents ‘On The Radar Volume 3’
Record label: Certified Banger Records
Release Date: 6/04/09

The third in the series of free to download compilations compiled by Certified Banger. What more is there to say?

Well actually, loads. Representing the UK and 100% supported by all artists involved ‘OTR Vol. 3’ is 21 tracks deep and features bare exclusives.

Reain (aka Wha’s His Face) has recorded an exclusive track entitled ‘On The Radar’ over one of RJD2’s finest beats. Yosh and Vee Kay have offered an up-front exclusive taken from Yosh’s forthcoming EP. The guys over at Don’t Talk To Strangers give you all the chance to get 2 tracks previously only available on a limited pressing of 200 CDs (‘When Planets Collide’ by Bane & Jonny Alpha and ‘Leafs’ by Chief Wigz).

Delegates of Culture offer you a chance to sample their soon to be released LP ‘Bad Guys’ with their track ‘Grip’. Mr. Loop brings some never-heard-before vibes with ‘Grown Man Music’ featuring Yosh, Slippa and Zoo Mark and Krate Krusaders grant you the opportunity to download their Ramson Badbonez featuring track ‘Incredible’ for the first time.

JVF Clique, Mr. Shaodow, Dialect and Stylah also provide special tunes from soon to be released projects. Elsewhere Joe Blow and Metabeats, E Hustle, Kasha, Baron Samedi, Ozmosis, JC and SonnyJim, Jee4ce and Capitol 1212 and Profisee give away tracks from previously available EPs and albums.

‘On The Radar Vol. 3’ features artists from up and down the country including Northern Ireland, South and West Yorkshire, London, Manchester, Birmingham and Cambridge – Certified Banger fully represents the talent this country holds. If you don’t recognise the names on here, there’s all the more reason to download this – you need to hear these tracks and then you need to find out more.

In a time when so much music is given away for free it’s good to remember that these guys need to eat too. ‘OTR Vol. 3’ is intended to be a signpost that points towards the places where these MCs and producers sell their wares. Check these tracks out, then buy the albums, EPs and 12”s that these artists put out.

Cadence and Dumi RIGHT are Alternate Reality, a hip hop duo intent on
bringing hip hop with substance to the hungry masses.

On their first single “Fast Talk,” Alternate Reality deliver a rapid
fire assault on the current state of American politics. On the heels
of Rod Blagojevic’s attempted senate seat ‘auction’ and with George
W. Bush
‘s disasterous presidency having lowered the bar to previously
unimaginable depths, “Fast Talk” dismantles political double-speak and
shines a light on the corrupt practices that have left so many people
craving change they can believe in. Alternate Reality deliver ill
lyrics over a perfect backdrop provided by Lord Lamont’s (KHz
Production) high-energy track.

Spectacula – Uh Oh

Posted by: Travis  //  Category: Hip Hop

I’ve heard good things about this cat, but I honestly can’t recall hearing anything personally, so I can’t give a proper recommendation on this one, but this is something I will be checking out this week sometime. - Trav

Queens MC pitches Curveball
First taste of new Mixtape

theres always

Hailing from Queens Village, New York, young rhyme thrower Spectacula shakes the foundation of what fans are accustomed to hearing, and heaves them the curveball they’ve been desperately waiting for with his instant playback song, Uh Oh. While a large percentage of artists are scared of leaving their comfort zone, Spec shows his versatility by being able to rock over an infectious track that would leave others baffled in the booth.

Having opted to take the mixtape path to secure his name on the Hip-Hop wall of fame, Spectacula has constantly delivered solid project after project and his impending release is no different. And this effort is no different in content, just a little different in its creation which Spectacula explains here ” The whole creative and recording process was like nothing I’ve done before; for Classical Muzik & Unexclusively Exclusive I wrote the bulk of the lyrics and picked the beats out before the recording process even began but every track for There’s Always an Alternative was written in no more than a hour before recording and the whole project was completed in 3 days.”

Uh Oh is the first track from Spectacula’s up and coming mixtape There’s Always an Alternative which sees him deliver a myriad of verses over some of the most respected and recognized tracks from artists deemed ‘alternative.’ Borrowing the musical scenery from artists such as The Verve, Santigold and the Ting Tings, Spectacula displays an undeniable ability to succumb to any melodic environment he finds himself in.

There’s Always an Alternative will be available for download on April 14th

The Winter’s End, continues with the metaphorical seasonal themes of the agro-centric Tobacco Road. It stems from the seed of belief in a direct connection between depression, suicide and the notoriously long, wet winters of the Pacific Northwest. Intentionally timed for a Spring release, the album, in its 5-track entirety, represents triumph over the gloomy clutches of the dark season, setting the tone, both sonically and emotionally, for Common Market’s new beginning (or, Nouveau Depart, as track one is appropriately titled, in French).

Within seconds of the album’s opening track it becomes blatantly obvious that the duo has deliberately stepped outside the box, as RA Scion raps over a jazz funeral dirge played in ¾ time. True to lyrical form, the emcee is verbose and on the offensive, but it’s with a renewed vigor drawn from the musical reference to a post-Katrina New Orleans that he calls into question the Old-World adages of The Church: “…in the wind a wish blows, what kind of men are content to live with those? I dig rows of holes for seeds, who I’mma feed with fishes and loaves?” The track swells into an awesome crescendo with the assistance of heart-wrenching synthesized horns; then suddenly it dies, as does the song’s narrator, in a disturbingly sweet peace.

RA continues to explore the intersection of life and lifelessness throughout The Winter’s End, uniquely so in Escaping Arkham, the EP’s second track for which the group filmed a video in the cemetery of New York’s famed Trinity Church. In the song, the emcee suspends time to ponder the thoughts racing through the mind of a suicide victim as he hovers over death. Singing falsetto on the chorus, RA explains he has effectively “run away chasing the sun.”

The big horns return on Brasso, but with the gritty spirit of raw braggadocio facilitated by the emcee who raps aggressively about cheating death, whether by luck or cunning willfulness: “Breathin’ life into the brass, slide into an ‘A’ and play to raise the dead, work with that serrated when they make it hard to break the bread.”

On Slow Down Moses, RA brings the listener inside an intimate conversation with a psychotherapist, to whom he has presumably been referred for the purpose of discussing the impact of his own father’s suicide. The rapper is as cool, calm and collected as ever while openly challenging the effectiveness of counseling: “It’s possible there’s not a proper answer to ‘what’s wrong,’ so what’s wrong with me wanting to cut through the customs?”

Lyrically, RA delivers a solid performance on each track, fulfilling the ever-increasing expectations of an audience growing to national proportions by the minute (Common Market plays two high-profile showcases at this year’s SXSW Festival in Austin, TX before departing for a tour of the entire Eastern Seaboard with rap legends Digable Planets).

Apart from RA’s willingness to really sing, there are no surprises here, vocally. What makes this project unlike any other effort by Seattle’s sans-Sonics-era rap mainstays is the sample-free production. The group has made its name on a foundation of classic R&B, funk and soul-infused loops reminiscent of John Starks-era NY rap. Not this time. Sabzi has foregone the crates vinyl in favor of digging through a catalog of soft-synths, and the result is refreshingly beautiful, begging the listener to rediscover the generous offerings of Common Market. The album’s final track, a 4-minute original instrumental, may be Sabzi’s boldest composition to-date.

The Winter’s End will be available for download on iTunes, Amazon and from other digital distributors on March 31. A new video for the track “Escaping Arkham” will be available soon.

From our good friends at Can’t Stop Fanatics, my man No Frillz offers up a smorgasbord of international hip hop. I know from my own personal listening habits, I don’t give enough “ear” time to international artists, so I always appreciate someone pointing me in the right direction.

This has been out for awhile and it’s one of those things that I meant to get up sooner than this, but for whatever reason didn’t get to it. It’s a nice little project, heavy emphasis on the bass/down south sound, which is alright with me. Worth checking out if you haven’t yet – Trav

SMKA Productions – composed of 808 Blake and 7King, brought together over 20 of the rising hip-hop and R&B artists in the underground hip-hop scene to create The 808 Experiment: Vol 1. Solomon Childs

The RZA, Divine (CEO) of Wu Music Group and Solomon Childs have asked for full support from all hip-hop media outlets in promoting the new Solomon Childs album, which is currently untitled. The album is dropping on May 5, 2009 via Wu Music Group. The first street single (not official or commercial single) off the new album is titled “What You Used To Be” and is produced by Chris Styles. DJ Kay Slay is the only DJ to have a hold of this record and it’s getting spins on his radio show and now we are releasing it to all hip-hop media outlets. This track provides insight to how hungry Solomon Childs is, in comparison to other rappers were once as hungry before.

As a bonus, a remix to Beyonce’s song “Halo” has been included. Solomon Childs drops two verses on this hot track and shows just how versatile he is.

In an era where run of the mill rappers come a dime a dozen, artist Solomon Childs sits atop his own throne as possessing one of the most notable and unique voices in all of hip hop. Coming up in the 90′s under the Wu-Tang regime afforded Solomon what seemed to be the opportunity of a lifetime. As the Wu-Tang Clan became the world’s most sought after group, Solomon’s early career was filled with nothing but gold and platinum certified achievement. The New York based emcee scored critical fanfare and praise for his contributions to Cappadonna’s “The Pillage” (Certified Gold), Ghostface Killah’s “Supreme Clientele” (Certified Platinum), Wu-Tang Killah Beez “The Sting” (Certified Gold), and both Wu-Tang Clan front man RZA’s “Bobby Digital” albums (Certified Gold Respectively). While fueling off the album successes of the late 90′s into the new millennium, Solomon Childs was sought
out by fans and critics all over the world who had sung his praises for his unique gutter flow and grimey verbal prowess. Spanning across Europe, Latin America, and throughout Northern America, Solomon made his mark in the physical by performing alongside artists such as the Wu-Tang Clan, RZA, Ghostface Killah, Theodore Unit and more while earning the loyalty and respect of a diverse and wide array of fans who cared nothing more than for the art of hip hop and those like Solomon leading at the forefront of the movement.

During this time, fans and media outlets all around the world embraced the artist known as Solomon Childs for his vocal contributions and appearances in many classic videos such as Cappadonna’s “Black Boy”, Ghostface Killah’s “Cherez La Ghost”, RZA and Kool G Rap’s “Cakes”, and Remedy’s “White Boy”. Whether it was long periods of tour travel and promotions, being a public icon, or the constant struggle that comes with maintaining a high demand work schedule as an entertainer, Solomon began prepping himself as a solo artist to further brand the name Solomon Childs and step out from the Wu-Tang shadow. While maintaining the same voice that his fans throughout the 90′s until now had held in such high regards, Solomon learned that it was essential to be as versatile as possible in order to survive in the ever so changing music business. Mixtape collaborations with the likes of RZA, Alicia Keyes, Destiny’s Child, Mark Ronson, and more earned Solomon a huge following as a solo artist with combined sales of over 75,000 units.

From an emcee that refuses to fade with the times as the essence of hip hop is eclipsed with short lived trends and even shorter lived artist careers, comes the man we know as Solomon Childs. Recognizing his potential at this very point in time is exactly the motivation behind Solomon’s desire to move forward and progress rather than dwell on the luxuries and successes of the past. In the year 2009, the voice of the people that is Solomon Childs is set to speak great volumes…make sure you’re tuned in

Check out the new video from Roc C and IMAKEMADBEATS titled “Won’t Fall”

featuring Rakaa Iriscience. Guest cameos include Ohno and Dj Rhettmatic. Roc C and IMAKEMADBEATS’ project “The Transcontinental” drops March 24th on Koch Ent.

Roc C and IMAKEMADBEATS are The Transcontinental – Wont Fall ft. Rakaa Iriscience / Imagine That from IMAKEMADBEATS on Vimeo.

With each subsequent release, casual listeners and hip hop heads alike are learning more and more just why Orlando’s most ferocious emcee has earned himself the title of MidaZ the BEAST. Continuing in the vein of his prior release,’Grandmasters Remix Lp’, which paired the UJ Empire word warrior with an album’s worth f DJ Muggs production, MidaZ‘s newest project finds him teamed up with another legendary hip hop producer.

‘Ozone’s Finest’ features MidaZ rocking over beats by none other than hip hop’s #1 Soul Brother, Pete Rock. “This album is me showcasing multiple styles,” says MidaZ. “I tried to show with this project that my mic game is tight…no matter what the drums do. I chose Pete Rock as my adversary because I believe he’s one of the greatest ever. I wanted to test my pen against greatness.”

Featuring guest appearances by Roc C of Stones Throw fame, Sabac Red (NonPhixion), Beretta 9 (Killarmy), TzariZM, IMAKEMADBEATS, and more, ‘Ozone’s Finest’ showcases the continuing evolution of a rapper whose vivid wordplay and razor-like agility on the microphone has earned him the praise of Wu-Tang’s Killarmy and Shyheim, Babygrande production duo Blue Sky Black Death, and anyone else who’s been blessed to witness the kid spit – all over the trademark Pete Rock sound that most consider to be the pinnacle of hip hop production. While the claim as ‘Ozone’s Finest’ currently sits under his belt, it’s only a matter of time before MidaZ expands his title to greater arenas.

I just now realized this was supposed to go up last week and somewhere and sometime in between then and now, it was only saved as a draft instead of being posted up. So my apologies go out to anyone I emailed back saying this would be up, only to now see it. My bad. Since most of this stuff has already been seen in other places, most of this is probably retread stuff, but I’ve never claimed to be the first to have ish up….but if you missed anything, here is your second chance.

A-Side Worldwide is one of my favorite labels to work with. Good people, and anyone down with Buff 1, Now On, and array of good DJs and producers is a-ok in my book (pun intended). After releasing the dope Biggie remix project, Astronote is back with remixes from Erykah Badu and 50. Hold up, before you get all “Fifty?!?!” ish on me…it’s a nice flex of his production skills, as he switches it up styles for both songs rather nicely.

A-Side family, producer Astronote. Here are a couple of new remixes he’s done. His production is crazy, he does many styles very well. Honestly, I think he produces different styles of Hip-Hop and R&B better than any producer I’ve seen. With all the 50 Cent hype out right now, we’re mainly focusing on promoting the 50 Cent remixes (both of which I think give the original songs more than a run for their money), but I know that not everyone is a fan of 50, so I wanted to shoot you a dope Erykah Badu Remix that Astronote did too.

From DJ Grafitti

We’re interested in any ideas you have for collabs, and open to ideas for how we can get his music out there. Let me know what you think, and feel free to post/blog/share any of the mp3s linked below. Also, I’ll be down at SXSW with the whole A-Side Worldwide family so if you’ll be down there let me know so we can link up!

Lastly, we have a little bit more juice left in the “Bigger & Better” – Notorious Remixes project. Be on the lookout for a bit more new heat from that project in the next couple weeks!

Virus Syndicate ft David Lewis ‘For the Music’

Virus Syndicate return to the Contagious imprint with a reggae fused dubstep anthem, featuring fellow Mancunian toaster and underground music/club promoter, David Lewis.

Contagious Music was founded by DJ/producer, MRK1 (Formerly Mark One), one of the leading heads in the ever evolving dubstep scene and combined with his heavy electro, grime, hip hop and jungle influences, his sound provides a super-sonic platform for lyrically astounding MCs like JSD, Goldfinger & Nika D. Together they make up Virus Syndicate.

Hailing from Manchester, Virus Syndicate’s raw urban bass-heavy sound leans towards many genres, and with their hard edged beats and lyrical intelligence, as well as a hotly anticipated second album for Planet Mu, the Virus are fast being tipped to become the next major UK break through act.

Piano stabs and melody kick off ‘For The Music’ with a warm vocal from Mr Lewis that gently toasts the trademark MRK1 beat. Cue the Virus MCs JSD, Nika D and Goldfinger cutting in and out of each other at warp speed, laid over a walloping LFO bassline and the track moves into what we love most about Virus Syndicate. Testosterone fuelled lyrics smash the track home with a vocal delivery that’s second to none. A track surely to be played across dubstep, grime and hip hop clubs alike.

From satire to irony, humour to sincere, gangster to political commentary, Virus Syndicate offer an interesting perspective on life and a much-needed breath of fresh air for the urban/dance crossover fans.

Press quotes for Virus Syndicate:

“..set to follow Dizzee Rascal, Wiley and Kano to cult status..”
HIP HOP CONNECTION

“Some of the tautest British MC-ing since the first Dizzee Rascal album.”

Free Download: The Custodian of Records sampler

Hailing from the muck that is Essex County, New Jerusalem (Home of Reggie Noble, Tame and El, Treach and Vinnie, LOTUG and The O.G Flavor Unit) comes The Custodian of Records. A self pro-claimed minimalist, once raised on the Radio, only began producing due to the mainstream of sewage and boring indie scene… Growing up on the four P’s (Premier, Prince Paul and Extra P) among an almost endless list of other production greats, his journey begin when he was in the 7th grade and his folks bought him the rag tag Gemini start up kit (As seen in the back of The Source adds next to the gold teeth.) When he found out how “beats” were actually made, he booked time at a local studio and brought his own samples to the engineer to record into the Akai S950 and then dump into the classic SP-1200. Followed by that was a decent software program and weekly trips to local record spots (Yesterdays Books and Music!) and months later began hitting the pads on his trustee MPC 2000XL..

After years of self doubt, he started to step out with beat tapes and would even bring his sampler with him to Speak easy sounds open mics… Wasted money and a shitload of records and beats later, he feels his production is ready for the masses to hear and appreciate…

His production has featured reputable artists such as Pace Won, Thirston Howl III, Bully Mouth (of Mr Lens Dummy Smacks Ent), Reef The Lost Cauze, Doap Nixon (AOTP) and has recently been working with a numerous local Jersey mc’s… one of which being Solzalez out of Newark, Brick City… The pair has had their tracks heard on such radio stations as “Coffee Break for Heroes and Villians” on WFMU with Noah Zark along with DJ Eclipse’s legendary “Halftime Show” on NYU radio.

His current focus now is to push his first complete album “Burton Music” featuring a wide variety of skilled wordsmiths and of course, raw, straight-to-the-point beats! Slated for digital release in early 2009 via Domination Recordings, The Custodian promises to deliver (to put it bluntly) “that classic boom bap shit!”
