WYDU Classics Jan 10

WYDU Classics, remember those things? Sure you do, probably the only reason you hang around here anymore. Hoping they would make a comeback. Well the waiting is over. Sure, it’s a month late, but here are those classics back to appease that appetite of the old school goodness for the month of January. I was in kind of an obscure mood, plus I downloaded a lot of stuff I wasn’t really familiar over the past couple months (big shout outs to TROY and where ever else I downloaded this stuff from). Some goodies on here, I highly suggest the 108 Dragons, Nothern Exposure and the People Without Shoes.

WYDU Classics Nov 09: WYDU Invented The Remix Vol 3

Posted by: Travis  //  Category: Hip Hop

I love me a good remix, which is where the fresh off of hiatus WYDU Classics picks up this month (actually November). We’ve done a couple WYDU Invented The Remix volumes in the past and figured it’s time for another since I’m in a remix kinda mood. I went back through the past two (Here and Here) and tried to pick remixes that haven’t been covered yet, and I missed the Ice T, but too late now as it’s already uploaded and ready to go.

We have everything from fairly well known remixes such as the extremely dope Positive K “Nightshift” remix, to even Naughty’s “It’s On” that was remixed by the Beatnuts has seen plenty of love on the nets since the blog explosion. The others might be a little harder to come across, such as the Tim Dog “Bronx N*gga” Blue Note remix, and surprisingly, this is one of the first times I can recall hearing the DJ Quik remix of Hi-C’s “I’m Not Your Puppet” and I found it on my hard drive, go figure. Couple I don’t know much about. Trying to figure out what remix that is for “Hell On Earth”, The Vinyl Reanimators? Anyone, anyone, Bueller, Bueller? The Shabazz The Disciple joint, “Crime Saga,” is one of those joints I’m not even sure I’ve heard the original, which might be cheating, but it’s a dope song none the less. Also be sure to check the DJ Eclipse remix for OC’s “Born 2 Live”, as he takes a song I wasn’t all that big on and turned it into a dope ass joint. Not much getting into them, just download and enjoy!

WYDU Classics Aug 09

Looks like I’m playing catch up with the monthly WYDU Classics series. We’ll drop last month’s today and hopefully I’ll get caught up this week with September’s release. This month is some tracks I’ve been bumping lately and thought would sound good together on a “tape”. Some tight remixes from Eric B & Rakim as well as KRS kick things off. A highly overlooked “Karma” track from DJ Hi-Tek’s group, Mood. It seems like I got carried away with Philly and Jersey artists as each location is represented heavily on this month’s issue. I’ll let the music do the talking for the rest

WYDU Classics July 09: Ladies First Edition

Posted by: Travis  //  Category: Hip Hop

Still in a holding pattern with the move. No internet, no computer desk, no computer as of yet. So I’m trying to get things up as I go, but I really dislike just throwing up the same ole thing everyone else is. It goes against every principle I had when I started this blog. But it’s neither here or there right about now. I’m hoping to have everything up and running and have “WYDU Offices” ready to go by next week.

Until then, we keep on catching up with the WYDU Classics that we fell a little behind with. This month errrr, July features nothing but the ladies. I’ll admit, I’ve slept on the ladies through the history simple because I didn’t see them as equals to their male counterparts when it came to spittin’ on the mic. I’ve since seen the error of my ways and enjoy many female classics. These songs represent some of those tracks. I’m missing a few of my favorites, since my CDs and vinyl are still packed up, so I was left to the devices found on my computer. None the less, some classics…..

WYDU Classics June 09

Posted by: Travis  //  Category: Hip Hop

What’s good y’all. It’s already August? No shit? Wow, this year is going by fast. Before you know it, the leaves will be turning, the air will be a changin’ and football will be on the big screen. I can’t fucking wait.

This week is going to be tricky. I moved to a new townhouse over the weekend, but still don’t have internet. I need to put together the computer desk I bought as well as get the internet hooked up, all this while working 40-50 hours this week at my nine to five. So not sure how that is going to effect the blog. I’ll try to stay on track, but it’s hard to say how this week will go. I gotta make sure I get the new WYDU office set up (meaning my spare bedroom).

It’s a good time to catch up on the WYDU Classics that I’ve missed for June and July. We’ll play catch up and get Augusts up as well. For this one, June’s, it’s just really a bunch of stuff I’ve downloaded else where that I’ve really enjoyed. Pretty much all the tracks on here are of the somewhat obscure and fairly new to myself so I’m not going to go to deep into their histories all that much. Just download and listen, most everything is from the 90′s…..

WYDU Classics May 09: WYDU Loves The 80's

Posted by: Travis  //  Category: Hip Hop

I got a bunch of stuff going on the next few days, so while I’ll try to stay up with the site, I’m not totally sure how it’s going to turn out. I also realized I forgot to put up a WYDU Classics for May, so I thought this is a good of time as any to do that. Don’t worry June will be up sometime this month as well.

I’ve been on a big 80′s kick, since reading the Run DMC book that was written by Ronin Ro. I realize that the more time passes, the more the 80′s sound is dated, but I don’t care, it’s still probably my favorite decade of hip hop. Just raw break beats and kick drums. It was hip hop in it’s purest essence (while it’s been on vinyl). So I had to dedicate this month to some of the 80′s music that I had laying around. Some classics and some rare gems litter this month’s collection. Everyone from radio DJs, Mr. Magic and Chuck Chillout appear this month. The legendary Fab 5 Freddy has a track on here as well. Nine in his original group, Deuces Wild makes an appearance. You have classics from Run DMC, Whodini and the original incarnation of Public Enemy and a young(er) Chuck D with the Spectrum City crew, which most of you I’m sure already knew. Some fairly obscure singles in The Tall Dark & Handsome and Bennetton Gang tracks, which are both typical 80′s track, which means they are dope. Early stuff from BDP and Mister Baby Got Back himself, Sir Mix-A-Lot. If you are a fan of the 80′s and don’t have most of this, this is a collection you’ll have to check out…..

Thanks to the sites I know I got a few tracks from, Will C., Philaflava, Jesse Serwer, and whoever I might have missed…

WYDU Classics March 09: The Spring Break Edition

Posted by: Travis  //  Category: Hip Hop

It’s that time of the year again, spring break time. Millions of drunken college kids invade warm places for plentiful booze, sex and all out craziness. Now that I’m a little past that age, I’d like to think I’ve “grown up” a bit, but I’m still aware of the countless college kids that visit WYDU. Hip Hop is a young man’s game, so in order to celebrate the month of March and the spring break that accompanies the month, WYDU style., with classic tracks from the not so distant past all the way back to the late 80′s.

I did the same thing back in 2007, which you can still catch. The link might not be good, but I’m pretty sure there is an active link somewhere on the blog for it. It’s amazing what two years can do for you. Two years ago, I was living in Denver, and I was drinking quite a bit. I didn’t need an excuse to drink, I could grab a 12 pack and bring it home. I’d start writing on the blog and before you know it, the 12 pack would be gone. I can still go through this blog and laugh at the posts that I wrote drunk. Don’t get me wrong, I had several partners in crime while living in Denver. Many drunken nights at Rockies games, many drunken nights running from the bars to catch the last light rail train of the night (only to puke all over Evans Station), and just ask CH Commish about playing beer pong with me and my numerous rants through out that night (I still hate Sid Bream). Two years later though, I’ve mellowed. I still like some beers, but no longer can I polish off a 12 pack without much thought. I still go out about once a month or so and drink enough to remind why I don’t do it much anymore.

Regardless of my old age kicking in, nothing like a tossing a few cold ones and what better way to enjoy some cold ones than with some quality music. This collection of alcohol themed music is kinda different from the one from two years ago. The one from two years ago contained mostly classics, either to me or to the average hip hop head. This collection, while having a few “classics” is mostly some rare and obscure joints. I hope they become the new “Classics” for some kid out there while he is getting ready to head out for the night. I hope it’s the soundtrack for some late night “asshole” games, or gets played at some BBQs. Trust me, there is some good shit to be found on this one…..

WYDU Classics March 09: The Spring Break Edition

I kinda broke this up into a “start of the night” stage, a “middle of the night” stage and an “end of the night” stage

Act One: The Start
You know how it is, the jump off. You are getting ready, thinking about the endless possibilities that lay ahead for the night. You then head to a friend’s house. You might toss a few back at his crib while you play playstation or whatever. Then you head to the bars. If you were like me, you got there early and went to the local hole in the wall first for some beers.

1. King Tee – Drunk Tekneek (From: Tha Trifflin’ Album, 1993)

I had to put it on this one to make up for missing it the last time around. Classic jam all the way around.

2. Lexicon – Party Party People (From: Youth Is Yours, 2003)

I remember hearing this track a few times back when it dropped, but forgotten about it until recently. A classic bar track, great for playing before heading out, hoping your night goes like the story in this song.

3. YZ – Drink at the Bar (From: The Ghetto’s Been Good To Me, 1993)

I’d consider this a borderline classic, although I never owned the CD in my party years. Figured this would be another song to get me “warmed” up for the night.

4. Lordz of Brooklyn - Saturday Night Fever (From: All In The Family, 2005)

I was never the biggest Lordz of Brooklyn fan, to me they were kinda of House of Pain rip-offs. But this song was a cool song to get you pumped. Anyone got the Kenny Dope remix, hook me up.

5. Lord Finesse – Party Over Here (Remix) (From: Party Over Here 12 Inch)

This is the remix, which was different from the album version, although it has Showbiz, who also did the original. Not really about drinking, but it was a “get the party started” type of track.

6. ALT & Lost Civilization – Tequila (From: Timebomb, 1992)

I’m not usually big on remix of old rock songs (we are talking OLD rock songs), but this was kinda of a cool track and “Tequila” in it’s original form was a favorite of mine. Kinda of bites the Spice 1 concept of naming characters of a story after alcoholic beverages.

Act II: The Middle of the Night

You know how it goes usually, after the cheap ass “hole in the wall” places, you head to where all the action is. Now, I haven’t lived in a city that hasn’t had a main focal place for bars. You know the spot. If the town has a college in it, then it’s even more pronounced. That’s where you go when you are a youngin’. There’s women, booze, and it’s the place to be seen. You know that it’s where all the action will take place, where the memories will be made….

7. Diversion Tactics - Pubs, Drunks & Hip Hop (From: Pubs, Drunk, & Hip Hop LP)

How can you not have a collection of drinking songs without a song that is named “Pubs, Drunks, & Hip Hop”. The crew is out of the UK, and I only knew of them because J-Zone and the Old Maid Billio
naires did some stuff with them, but this track is worthy of being on here.

8. Mighty Casey - Liqourland (From: The EP, 2000)

Part of the indie boom of the late 90′s/early turn of the century, this joint was one of those that I stumbled across during my napster/audio galaxy days. It quickly became a classic for those drunken nights.

9. Mr. X & Mr. Z – Drink Old Gold (From: 12 Inch single, 1987)
Still a classic after all these years. You should really know this and if you don’t then familiarize yourself with it.

10. Big Daddy Kane – 3 Forties & a Bottle of Moet (From: Daddy’s Home, 1994)
Kane does the crazy drunken style, like you should be doing after about four hours of drinking.

11. Das EFX – 40 & a Blunt (From: Hold It Down, 1995)
“All I wanna do is smoke a blunt and drink some fuckin’ brew”. Is there anything else you need in a song when you are drinking?

12. Erule – Rum & Coke (From: Cold Currentz, 2000?)

Erule captures the essence of club hopping, which every spring breaker does sometime on their trip.

13. Lord Sear – Alcoholic Vibes (From: 12 Inch Single, 1997)

Drunkin’ funk from Lord Sear.

14. Baritone Tiplove - Turn Up The Bottle (From: Livin’ Foul, 1991)

This would have been a classic if the album it was on had reached more cats. Phill The Soulman is hilarious on this track.

15. Tha Alkaholiks – Hip Hop Drunkies (Vinyl Reanimators Remix)

A different version of an old favorite

16. Javier & the Str8jackers – Pass Me Da 40oz (From: The Hard Way, 1991)

I wasn’t aware of this album until I found it on Bust The Facts, but this track got some play during those drunken nights in Denver.

17. Drunken Hoodlumz20 Forties & 40 Blunts (From: Drunken Hoodlumz Presents Blunts, Beats & Brew, 1997)
It’s only an instrumental track, but so what? You should know what
sample they use just from the song’s title. Drunk funk music, that end of the night music that they start playing at the bar to get your asses out of there.

18. KagePass Me A 40 (From: Everyday Thangs, 1994)

If you were like me, once you got kicked out of the bars (either by the fact it was closing time, or other means) you went straight to the corner store and picked up more beer. Usually it was a 40 in the younger years, and usually you’d find a 3/4 full 40 sitting next to you on the couch when you woke up the next morning.

Act III: The End

After the bars are closing, you stumble back to your ride (which hopefully you have a DD, be smart, you are not invincible) and end up at a friends crib. You would usually drink some more, although you didn’t really need to. You play more video games (Mortal Kombat was my shit back in the days) and pass out on the couch.

19. Louis Logic – Dos Factotum (From: Sin-A-Matic, 2003)
Part two of a CLASSIC drinking song. This one is just as good, and reminds me of stumbling around, being way too drunk.

20. Little Shawn – Dom Perignon (From: New York Undercover EP, 1995)

If you got lucky, you went home with a lady friend. That is if you didn’t get too drunk and make a fool of yourself (I did that often). You need some bubbly once you get her back to your crib or hotel room if you are on spring break. And you need some seduction music. This is as close as it gets to Barry White.

21. Rehab – Sittin’ At The Bar (2008 Remix) (From: Sittin’ At A Bar, 2008 although the original appeared on Southern Comfort, 2000)

Not sure how “hip hop” this is, but it does have a some spitting lyrics in over the bridge. It’s one of those end of the night sing-a-long songs. Fortunately, this is one of the few things I can say never happened to me after a night of drinking, and if it happens to you, shit’s over.

WYDU Classics Feb 09

Posted by: Travis  //  Category: Hip Hop

Since the month of February is almost in the record books and I haven’t posted a volume of WYDU’s Classics for it, I figured I better sneak this in while I can. Like most of the WYDU Classics, there is really no theme other than some tracks that I’ve been diggin lately or have been wanting to hear again.

Seems like I was on a remix kick this month, although it wasn’t really intentional. Phat Kat, who is among my favorites from the Detroit area, comes correct on “Dedication To The Suckers”, an old Audio Galaxy favorite of mine from back in the day. It’s also an early Jay Dee aka J Dilla beat. A Dope remix can be found for “Sobb Story”, one of my favorite tracks from LONS first album and the remix is just as good and if not better. There are also dope remixes of “Catch A Bad One” from Del, “That’s When You Lost” from Souls. Heiro always had remixes on their singles and they were always up to par. Former Source “Unsigned Hype” alum, Legion of Dume drop an ill track on “Sons of Sam”. Too bad that group didn’t take off, although if I remember right, Darc Mind who dropped a album a year or two ago was part of that crew. A soulful, rag-time version of “Ain’t Got No Class” shows up from Da Lench Mob. I was a BIG fan of Lench Mob’s first album, simply from the production. This track wouldn’t have fit on there, but it’s still pretty nice. There are some obscure tracks floating around on this as well. That Mood Swingaz track, “The Blessed”, is a great track. It’s nothing new, but the beat and the MC all fit together so well.

Enough talking, check it out and I’ll be back this weekend with some new Spotlights and I’ll have the WYDU Top 20 Chart up early next week….

WYDU Classics Jan 09: The Various Artists Edition

Posted by: Travis  //  Category: Hip Hop

The hip hop compilation has been around since the beginning of time. It’s kind of the bastard child of the mixtape. I remember buying the cheap ass K-Tel compilations from back in the day, basically because they were easy to come by and they provided some music that I didn’t get to hear very readily because of my location. They would just jack whatever tracks where hot at the time and throw them on a tape. Over time though, some of the would become specialized, provide only exclusives and unreleased stuff. Those particular releases could contain some prized gems, or they could be full of half assed crap that a particular artist didn’t want to release on his own projects.

This month’s WYDU Classic focuses on some of those hidden gems and just some of my personal favorites from a small, small, small sampling of “Various Artist” compilations found on my computer. I tried to focus on songs and tracks that only showed up on that particular compilation, the ones that showed up in other places that I noticed and remembered, I tried to note. Of course, I might of missed some, but these are all tracks that I enjoy.

I included the discogs links for them, if anyone wants a particular compilation that is listed, feel free to request it, I have all of them so it would be no problem.

18. MC TroubleCan’t Get Enough (From What Does It All Mean?, 1988)

A. Not sure if this is some home made compilation that sneaked into my files, I can’t find any info on it otherwise. It’s dope though. The track is also a B-side only track from their “When I Make It” single that dropped originally in 1992.

B. Was first released on the Bomb Hip Hop Compilation, but later was released as part of a special bonus CD for the Big Shots release that was put out in 1994. For some reason, I don’t remember getting an extra CD with mine when I bought it, I’m going to have to go back and look.

C. Yup, same Live Squad as the one Big Stretch would later be involved in. I’m not on the up and up about their history, but if Stretch is on this song, he sure the hell changed his voice and delivery later.

My once a year cold has came to visit me this week. Gotta love it when your nose is rubbed raw from blowing it so fuckin’ much. At least it’s just fucked up sinuses and a basic head cold and not anything more serious.

For this month’s WYDU Classics, I thought about doing the Christmas song theme, but honestly, I’ve never been much of a fan of Hip Hop Christmas songs. I’m not sure what it is, but it was always like oil and water to me. So I said “fuck it” and went with something more in the vein of hip hop. It was simple, a mix of some of my old favorites that haven’t made an appearance on the longest running series on WYDU and a few dope tracks that I’ve picked up the past month (most of those off the Philaflava forum) that I wanted to hear more of. So there you have it, no rhyme or reason for this months collection other than I wanted to hear the shit. Easy enough.

We start off with the Jungle Brother’s “On The Road Again”, the remix version by Q-Tip. I remember preferring this version a whole hellva lot more than the album version. I wasn’t the biggest JB’s fan (I know, sacrilegious), but this jam was kinda like Tribe’s “Can I Kick It”, in that it grabbed my attention. Both the remix for “I’m The Magnificent” by Special Ed and Show & AG’s “Fat Pockets” should have already been on these a long time ago. I’m a BIG Juggaknots fan, and “Jive Talk” is just one of four or five EXTREMELY dope tracks from the Juggknots self titled EP (Later re released as the Clear Blue Skies EP). Jesse West did some dope stuff with 3rd Eye and Nine, so I usually snatch up anything I see that he’s been associated with. Didn’t know this remix by him for “Valley of the Skinz” by Trends of Culture was even out there until I saw it on the TROY forums (and check out the blog if you haven’t, it’s fuckin’ amazin). It lives up to the anticipation. Great shit. Then I thought Tim Dog’s “Do or Die” was kinda of a dud, but this 12 inch version of “I Get Wrecked” with KRS and produced by DJ Moe Love is nothing short of adrenaline inducing and I’m not responsible for any holes you might punch in a wall. To slow things up, we come up with Dysfunkshunal Familee track featuring Finsta Bundy, “Like That You Don’t”, which I hadn’t heard before this month, but it’s some gritty NY music from the mid 90′s. Hard drums highlights the Deuces Wild track “Deuces is Def”. They are a group I’ve been digging up their material since hearing Nine with them on a track. I believe they are Funkmaster Flex’s old group, or he was down with them. Too lazy to look it up right now. We jump over to the left coast (plus Houston for the original Scarface 12inch version) for some nice goodies, including Pac’s original version of “Got My Mind Made Up” which features some verses from some other cats, such as Inspectah Deck. There is also a nice remix of “Me-o-Mi-o” from Casual and the classic “Battle Drill” Saafir. We jump over to the blogs namesake, No Face and their classic “Fake Hair Wearin’ Bitch” featuring the infamous 2 Live Crew. The last few tracks are full of personal favorites, except for the Unsung Heroes track, featuring none other than one of my all-time favorite Canadian MCs, Frankenstein. It’s a fairly recent track I think, and one I hadn’t heard, but daaaaaayum. It’s nice. Enjoy!
